REI Gives: 2009 Dallas/Plano Grant Recipients

2009 - 2010

Annually, REI dedicates a portion of its operating profits to help protect and restore the environment, increase access to outdoor activities, and encourage involvement in responsible outdoor recreation. REI employees nominate organizations, projects, and programs in which they are personally involved to receive funding or gear donations. For more information on REI grants, visit www.rei.com

Audubon Texas:
Eco-Investigations at Trinity River Audubon Center
Eco-Investigations is a four-hour expedition field trip led by Audubon education staff that provides inquiry-based, hands-on nature education in an immersed setting. Program activities include guided hikes, pond study, and exhibit hall exploration. All activities relate to local ecology, habitat study and stewardship of natural resources. Students engage in scientific observation, nature study, and critical thinking. Each Eco-Investigation is supplemented with pre- and post-activities to strengthen learning and extend lessons into classroom and home. Audubon Eco-Investigations addresses the need for students to improve and strengthen their science skills, while introducing them to nature. REI's grant will provide educational materials and equipment to support children in their outdoor adventures and studies of nature.

For the Love of the Lake:
Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-Up and
Every Saturday Shoreline Spruce-Up
White Rock Lake is the focal point of a 70sq. mile watershed. Tributaries flowing in from all over North Texas deposit a great deal of debris, natural and man-made, along the shoreline. The Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-Up program and sibling, Every Saturday Spruce-Up, help the Parks Dept. make the shoreline clean and safe for all who use it. The Saturday Spruce-Up programs also help volunteers learn and teach conservation and responsible stewardship in a true hands-on environment. The support of REI aids the outfitting of volunteers with the tools, equipment, and support supplies necessary to keep this program growing and successful.

Sierra Club Foundation - Dallas Inner City Outings:
Sierra Club Inner City Outings/Dallas Group
Sierra Club's Dallas Inner City Outings is a community outreach program that provides outdoor and wilderness experiences for low-income, at-risk youth who would not otherwise have these opportunities. ICO volunteers help participants learn to safely explore, enjoy and protect the natural world, which provides a foundation for developing respect for the environment and their community. Youth who often lack the adult role models and support learn valuable, character building outdoor skills, and strengthen their ability to face the challenges presented by their daily lives. REI's grant will provide transportation and cover expenses for a variety of additional camping, hiking and service outings throughout the coming year.

Heard Natural Science Museum And Wildlife Sanctuary Inc:
Outdoor Nature Trails & Camping for Students & Scouts
The Heard Natural Science Museum is working to implement Leave No Trace education in hiking and backpacking outdoor education programs as well as overnight camping experiences with students, scouts and family groups. An impressive group of highly trained and dedicated volunteers offers critical support to expand the reach of these programs to new participants. REI's grant will provide Leave No Trace education materials and outdoor gear and teaching tools for program participants, volunteers and staff. These items will help to engage participants in new outdoor experiences while encouraging environmental stewardship.

University of North Texas Foundation - Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area:
Outdoor Adventures at LLELA
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) seeks to preserve and restore native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education. Nearly 8,000 children visited LLELA in 2008 to participate in single-day hikes, field studies and other educational activities. REI's grant will help launch a 2-day overnight program with the intent of providing a deeper and more comprehensive experience in the outdoors. The overnight program will introduce urban youth to a combination of outdoor recreational opportunities and conservation activities that will promote an interest in land stewardship and volunteerism. The skills they learn in the process will empower them to believe that they can make a difference in their communities and the world at large. Group sizes will intentionally be kept small to facilitate a high quality experience for each participant. REI's grant will provide outdoor gear to support paddling and camping activities to be involved in the 2-day program.
