REI Spokane Gives-2009 Community Grants

2009

YMCA/Camp Reed-$5,000
YMCA Camp Reed seeks to ensure that all children of the Inland Northwest have an opportunity to attend camp. Camp Reed provides kids with a chance to experience beautiful natural areas and take part in a wide variety of outdoor activities. REI's grant will help provide low-income youth with the resources to attend Camp Reed and take part in all that the camp offers. In addition to experiencing the outdoors, youth will learn about responsible environmental stewardship through Camp Reed's partnership with REI and the PEAK program. REI funds will provide basic equipment and supplies to enable youth to take part in camp activities.

Conservation Northwest-$5,000
Conservation Northwest engages citizens of all walks of life in wildlife monitoring in order to document and better understand the presence of wildlife in Washington. Citizen volunteers have a chance to hike into wild areas, and learn backcountry travel and wildlife tracking skills. Their outdoor experience contributes in a meaningful way to protection of wildlife and wildlife habitat. Their experience also encourages them to become stewards for the creatures and places they learn about. REI funds will provide support for interns who will help organize and coordinate volunteer activities. REI's grant will also provide supplies and equipment for volunteers to use during their monitoring activities

SpokeFest Association/Bike to Work Spokane-$5,000
The SpokeFest Association and its Bike to Work Spokane committee will use REI's grant to support their development and presentation of the third annual Bike to Work Spokane campaign culminating in Bike to Work Week May, 2010. An ongoing education effort leading up to a focused week-long set of events will recruit individuals to ride their bikes to work, school, and for other transportation. Building on the successful first year of Commute Challenge teams in 2009, the Commute Challenge will expand to a month in duration to enable more people to participate. A "Walk and Roll to School Day" held in partnership with Spokane Public Schools will involve schoolchildren at elementary, middle and high schools to encourage active transportation. REI funds will be used to support the marketing, outreach, and bicycle education efforts of Bike to Work Spokane.
