REI Gives: 2009 St. Louis Area Grant Recipients

2009

Annually, REI dedicates a portion of its operating profits to help protect and restore the environment, increase access to outdoor activities, and encourage involvement in responsible outdoor recreation. REI employees nominate organizations, projects, and programs in which they are personally involved to receive funding or gear donations.

Gateway Off-Road Cyclists $4,992
Switchback Construction - Greensfelder Park
The Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC) are dedicated to advocacy, design, construction and maintenance of multi-use trails. GORC's goal is to keep existing sustainable multi-use trails open to hikers, biker and equiestrians as well as creating new sustainable multi-use trails. With the support of REI's grant, GORC will construct two rolling crown switchbacks and install hardened drainage crossings on existing and planned singletrack trails within the trail system at Greensfelder Park in St. Louis County. The REI funds would be used to purchase building materials and tools to support the all-volunteer construction project.

Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation $5,000
Missouri Stream Team Program
The Missouri Stream Team Program is a stream stewardship and education program that enables and empowers citizens from all walks of life to take ownership in protecting and conserving Missouri rivers and streams. The Stream Team Program provides tools and supplies to 80,000 volounteers for river and stream clean-ups with a heavy concentration of volunteers in the St. Louis area. The St. Louis REI store supports the program with its own team of stream clean-up and restoration volunteers. REI's grant funds will be used to purchase re-usble stream clean-up bags and other supplies to support volunteer projects and events.

Sherwood Forest Camp Inc $5,000
Extended Wilderness Camping Experiences
Sherwood Forest transforms lives through camp experiences! It provides long-term relationships and teaches essential life skills to boys and girls from disadvantaged families in the St. Louis region. Living together at camp and on extended wilderness trips, children from diverse racial, ethnic, religious and family backgrounds participate in fun and challenging activities where they practice team building and decision-making skills and learn to respect themselves, each other, and the natural environment. Summer Wilderness Camping activities teach children to plan, prepare, and complete 3-, 5-, and 8-day wilderness trips through trails and rivers of the Missouri Ozarks, helping them to know, appreciate, and protect the outdoors. REI's funds help more children take part in the extended wilderness trips by supporting the staff members who coordinate and lead these trips.
