In late October, REI formed a partnership with VolunteerMatch, a nonprofit that connects potential volunteers with opportunities in their local communities. Thanks to the REI Online team, visitors to REI.com "Get Out There" section can browse thousands of opportunities that match their ZIP code, personal interests and skills.
REI has already become one of the top ten sources of volunteers for VolunteerMatch. In just the first two months of our partnership, the site has referred over 1,200 volunteers to 823 nonprofits that run the gamut from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to the American Cancer Society. Most REI-referred volunteers choose to contribute to community and environmental causes.
A web of giving
Our partnership with VolunteerMatch is just one way REI harnesses the power of volunteers to give back to the communities where we work. Through our giving programs, REI partners with more than 400 nonprofit groups and clubs that focus on conservation and access to outdoor recreation. Last year, we mobilized thousands of volunteers to join REI service projects on trails, parks and waterways around the country.
"We're thrilled with the interest in VolunteerMatch," says corporate giving manager David Jayo. "It's amazing that a few clicks on a computer screen can get you out of your home, into the community and working alongside others to make a difference."
