Barr Trail
This easy-to-difficult 12-mile trail to Pike's Peak begins at Manitou Springs in the Pike National Forest. The trail can be hiked year round, and the lower section, the 7.0 miles to Barr Camp, is an excellent spring hike. Tent camping and cabins are available at Barr Camp. Mount Cutler Trail
This easy 2-mile hike begins at the Mt. Cutler trailhead in North Cheyenne Canyon Park. The elevation gain is 415 ft. While hiking there will be views of dense forest, red rock formation, vivid waterfalls and vistas of the high plain and the city to the east. Fallen Timber Loop
This easy 2-maike loop begins at the Fox Run Regional Park trailhead. The trail offers year round hiking, with an elevation gain of 165 ft. The loop involves a trek through a forested area with a clear view of Pikes Peak at some points. Use USGS Monument map or El Paso County Regional Parks pamphlet.
The Crags
This easy 5-mile round trip hike takes about three hours. To reach the trailhead go west on US Highway 24 to the small town of Divide, then south on Colorado Highway 67 to County Road 62 (which becomes Forest Road 383), turn left and drive down a rough road. The trailhead starts at the upper loop. The elevation gain is 700ft. The highest point is 10,800 ft. The hike will lead you through forests of Engelmann Spruce, subalpine fir, aspen glades and some natural meadows. Best time to hike is June-October. Use maps of Pikes Peak, Woodland Park.
Stanley Canyon
This moderate 5-mile hike starts at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The elevation gain is approximately 1,861 feet. Stanley Canyon rises above the Air Force Academy offering a spectacular view of the Academy and at the top of the trail there is a beautiful lake (and if you choose you could take a dip). Best time to hike is spring, summer and the fall. Use Trails Illustrated Maps of Pikes Peak, Canon City.
New Santa Fe Trail
This easy 7-mile trail is located west of I-25 and takes you from Palmer Lake to the U.S. Air Force Academy. The elevation gain is minimal. Best time to hike is May-June and September-October. The trail has a great view of Rampart Range to the west also Pikes Peak to the south and offers an opportunity to see wildlife. Use the map posted at the site.
Waldo Canyon
This easy to moderate 7-mile loop begins at the trailhead west of Manitou Springs just off of Highway 24. The elevation gain is 1200 ft. With year round hiking, this popular hike offers a wonderful view of upper Pikes Peak and of the high plains. Deer Creek Canyon Park
This moderate 7-mile trail is located Southwest of Chatfield Reservoir in Jefferson County near Denver. Best time to hike is May-June and September-October. The loop gives hikers an opportunity to see wildlife and has a great view. Elevation gain is 500 ft. Use Jefferson County Open Space Park Map for Deer Creek Canyon Park.
Mount Yale
This mildly challenging 14er hike in the Sawatch Range is directly west of Buena Vista. From the intersection in the middle of town, drive west on Chaffee County 306 for approximately twelve miles to the Denny Creek trailhead on the north side of the road. The elevation gain is 4,269 ft. the highest point is 14,196 ft. From the Continental Divide you will be able to see thirty of Colorado's 14ers on a clear day, and on the way there is nothing to see but your typically fragrant and beautiful mixed aspen and conifer forest and babbling mountain brooks.
