As one can see I carry most of the gear in my old but trusty JanSport backback with assorted JanSport gear bags. On the other hand one of my granddaughters will be learning about backpacks soon as I plan future equipment needs for her.

As a wilderness backpacker with over 50 years of experience I often find myself teaching young hikers about the outdoors. This is one of the best oppurtunities to do that.

The adventures into history; the petroglyphs are located in the SW corner of New Mexico and because no one knows the age the mystery remains locked in the rocks they are carved in. One such feature is that of a carving of what could possibly be a Spanish explorer on horseback. Time really does keep secrets locked away.

The only water available along the trail in the Railroad Canyon area of the Gila Nat'l Forest.

On the way to a new adventure these three hikers are looking forward to the wilderness hike of a lifetime. The greatest hikes begin with the first step and these kids are not waiting.
