Anna Hurst, a 22-year-old senior at the University of Kansas, experienced plenty of sun and sand during her spring break. No beach, but lots of sun and sand. She and 6 other Kansas students spent their spring break volunteering at Zion National Park. “It was super fun," Hurst said. Aug. 25 marks the 95th anniversary of the National Park Service, and I raise my water bottle to honor the date. To properly note the occasion, I also offer a little photo album of my 2-week visit to Zion National Park earlier this month. What an awesome, awesome place. At first glance, Las Vegas and REI may seem like polar opposites. One is glitzy and, uh, resource intensive; the other is outdoorsy and low impact. But, get beyond the Strip and you'll soon discover that the Vegas area is actually a great outdoor gateway.
