Today’s guest blogger, REI employee Ching Fu, recounts the soaring highs and chilly lows of her bike tour of the entire Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway last summer: It had been raining for 3 days straight, and I was ready to just be home. But I had to keep pedaling. The bitter cold rain was an unwelcome surprise, especially since it was July in the southeast... ...
Is trail building hard work or fun? The answer from the field: It's both! Every year, each REI store partners with a local conservation group in support of National Trails Day. The following recap is from our friends at the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, a volunteer, nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization established in 1981 to plan, construct and maintain the beautiful, 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail in California and Nevada. This year's National Trails Day on June 4 was the Tahoe Rim Trail Association's ...

A big "thank you" goes out to all of you who volunteered on an service project through REI or one of REI's nonprofit partners in 2010. It was quite a year of giving back. Those fun hours we spent—clipping and yanking ivy, building and maintaining trails, cleaning up parks and beaches and getting dirty on similar stewardship projects all over the country—are captured in REI's recently released 2010 stewardship report. It was the year we transitioned from "random acts of kindness" to a process-driven approach towards sustainable business thinking. What changed in 2005 was the recognition that if we were truly going to make a difference, we needed to become better ...

Amy Brown helped NCI launch the North Cascades Wild program in 2006 and has been coordinating it ever since. The program seeks to connect students to public lands through service work, leadership development, and community building. The goal: inspire participants to become citizen stewards of the environment and their ...

Hello. My name is Kevin, and I’ll be blogging about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or as we call it at REI: stewardship. If the co-op’s purpose is to get people outdoors, stewardship is all about doing our part to make sure there is an outdoors to get out to. That means REI is a different kind of business. Back in 1938, the founders set a high bar for responsible business, starting with launching REI as a co-op. Over the years, REI employees have carried the tradition through ...
