The desire of backcountry travelers to be in constant contact with “the outside world” is by no means a new notion. Slightly more novel is the use of an electronic signaling device. A quick search on the Internet reveals hundreds of articles and a variety of products (REI's selection of emergency electronics includes personal locator beacons and satellite messengers).
