Today's question: Did astronauts really eat "astronaut ice cream"? The folks at the brainy website Mental Floss today reported yes, American space travelers did eat astronaut ice cream—once, during the Apollo 7 mission in 1968. I wonder if they washed it down with Tang? I'm not an astronaut, but I can confirm that on many trips into the backcountry ether I have eaten what is more commonly known as freeze-dried ice cream. Food is pretty much a can't-miss gift. Now, if you want your gift to be a conversation-starter as well, give 'em food they can eat 10 years from now: freeze-dried ice cream. This is one camper-minded food item that elicits polar opinions, from "eew" to "umm." I'm firmly in the thumbs-up crowd. Nay-sayers think it's initially chalky and thus unappealing. For a first-time visitor such as me, the summer Outdoor Retailer trade show is a fairly dazzling event. With more than 1,100 exhibitors crammed into the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, from heavyweights (The North Face) to innovative emerging brands (NEMO Equipment, with a interesting line of clever tents), OR is like an REI flagship store multiplied by 20.
