Today’s guest blogger, REI employee Ching Fu, recounts the soaring highs and chilly lows of her bike tour of the entire Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway last summer: It had been raining for 3 days straight, and I was ready to just be home. But I had to keep pedaling. The bitter cold rain was an unwelcome surprise, especially since it was July in the southeast... ...
Last October, Jetboil, with input from REI, introduced the CrunchIt, a clever tool that solves the problem of what to do with empty gas canisters. In just 9 months, REI members and customers have purchased more than 10,000 CrunchIts, so I thought I'd update our original blog post on this innovative product. Canister stoves, especially integrated designs like the Jetboil Flash, have redefined the backpack stove category for light, fast, fuel-efficient cooking systems. The challenge has long been ...

Want to learn about someone? Share a tent with them. Want to really get to know them? Pitch your tent someplace odd—like downtown Salt Lake City, on the main exhibition floor of the Salt Palace Convention Center where the annual summer Outdoor Retailer trade show is going on. And do it while cracking jokes with a late-night security crew that has been caught off guard. Folks, meet my tentmate, Bill Gamber: • Founder of Big Agnes gear and Honey Stinger energy foods. • Cyclist, skier, climber, ...

Two new systems, the Sol and the Zip, recently appeared on shelves at REI. The Sol Ti (for titanium), the lightest of the trio, will float into stores within 2 weeks. All 3 of the new systems (part stove, part cooking cup) are a half-inch shorter than the Flash ...

What's the best outdoor gift you have ever given or received? When I posed that question to several REI colleagues, here's what I heard: Sweet treat: I gave our nieces the Camper's Dream Play and Freeze ice cream maker. Man, do they ever love making ice cream with it. Even in sunny Southern California it works easily. It's a big hit with their friends, too. It's even easy to clean. —Danny Kid-size sleeping bag: We gave our daughter a Kindercone sleeping bag for Christmas 2 years ago. She loves ...

Three cheers for product innovation that solves environmental challenges. In 2004, Jetboil® successfully entered the backpacking stove field with their innovative, efficient, lightweight cooking system. Now, working with REI, they have introduced CrunchIt™, a solution to the biggest challenge of disposable canister stoves. The challenge? How to responsibly dispose of empty butane gas canisters. Butane canister stoves have some great advantages, but users aren't sure how to recycle the empty ...
