Intermediate Snowshoeing (Outing)

Are you ready for the next step? Head out on snowshoes with the REI Outdoor School to gain a summit or a destination at elevation. Along the way we’ll explore aspects of technique, navigation, and know-how necessary for Sierra winter adventure. You’ll be exhilarated with your experience on this steeper, more technical snowshoe outing.

Introduction to Snowshoeing Outing or equivalent skill and fitness level is recommended.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Plenty of energy-rich food for lunch & snacks
  • 2 liters of water in bottles or hydration system
  • Base layer: long sleeve insulating top and bottoms – no cotton please
  • 2 pairs of moisture-wicking socks: a lightweight synthetic liner sock under a wool or synthetic outer sock
  • Waterproofed boots
  • Warm gloves or mittens
  • Warm hat, neck gaiter or other head / neck cover
  • Lower Body Mid layer: pants / tights made of synthetic fabric*
  • Upper Body Mid layer: sweater, jacket or vest made of synthetic fabric*
  • Lower Body Outer layer: water-resistant** snow / wind pants
  • Upper Body Outer layer: water-resistant** jacket with hood
  • Personal items: lip salve, sunglasses, sunscreen, compass, headlamp
  • Fanny pack or lightweight day pack with waist strap to carry all your items and clothing
  • Snowshoes, snowshoe poles, and gaiters - or use those provided
  • Insulating jacket (down or synthetic fill), extra gloves, camera, goggles, and sit pad are all recommended extras.

* synthetic fabrics: fleece, polyester, nylon, or “soft shell” fabrics.

** water-resistant fabrics: typically made of nylon, possessing a barrier to external moisture such as Gore-Tex.

REI OUTDOOR SCHOOL PROVIDES:

  • Snowshoes, poles, and gaiters for all participants
  • Van transportation from the store to the trailhead and back
  • Map of area, group medical supplies, and all fees

REI Outdoor School Cancellation Policy

To be courteous to all customers, we request you notify REI Outdoor School at least 48 hours prior to the trip if you intend to cancel; late cancellations will not be refunded. Class or Outing cancellations on the part of REI Outdoor School will be refunded in full, regardless of timeframe. Inclement weather does not necessarily cancel an event; REI Outdoor School will contact you in the event of a cancellation.

Waitlists

In order to keep our instruction personable, space on our classes and outings is limited. If you are interested in an activity that has filled, we would be happy to place you on a waitlist for that event. If space opens, we will contact the list in the order you signed up, but we are unable to hold that spot if we're unable to speak with you directly. Providing us with your best contact information increases your chances of joining us.

Availability

Classes and outings are subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control. Should a program be cancelled or a rescheduled, all registered participants will be notified.
