Philadelphia REI Outdoor School

Introduction to Mountain Biking – Women Only (Outing)

Led by women for women, this outing teaches techniques that will make you a stronger rider and give you the confidence and basic skills you need to ride on your own. Skills covered include mounting and dismounting, ascending and descending hills, fit, trail etiquette, choosing lines and negotiating minor obstacles (roots, rocks, etc.)

We’ll also cover women’s specific equipment selection, basic bike handling, and terrain skills. Novara mountain bikes are provided for those without a bike of their own at no extra cost. Please bring your helmet and proper riding apparel.

Recommended for those 14 and older; those under 18 must be accompanied by parent or responsible adult. NO RIDER IS LEFT BEHIND!

Advance registration is required. Call or visit any Philadelphia area REI to sign up.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Your own personal bike helmet. For your comfort and safety REI does not provide helmets.
  • Your own mountain bike if you prefer! We do have brand new Novara mountain bikes available for use. Please be sure you selected this free bike option at the time of sign-up and provided us with your height measurements.
  • If you are bringing your personal bike, please bring a spare tube (our tubes may not fit your tires)
  • Bike water bottle(s) or hydration pack filled with water or energy drink
  • LUNCH
  • Sunglasses
  • Energy snacks, power foods, or gels
  • Handlebar pack or small pack to carry food, sunscreen and personal items
  • Closed-toe athletic shoes with firm soles
  • Change of clothes (especially socks) to leave in the van. Some of our venues have water crossings and you may get very wet or muddy.

REI also recommends the following items to make the trip more comfortable:

  • Cycling shoes
  • Padded cycling gloves
  • Sunglasses
  • Cycling shorts or snug-fitting but comfortable shorts with minimal seams (e.g. compression shorts)
  • Additional layers (fleece, wind-breaker) for warmth and weather protection
  • Photo ID and Insurance Card

PRE-TRIP PREPARATION:

Please be sure to pre-hydrate by drinking plenty of water the day and evening before the ride to ensure that you are not beginning the ride with any level of hydration "deficit." This is actually a good habit for all athletic activities.

REI OUTDOOR SCHOOL PROVIDES:

  • REI Outdoor School cycling instructors
  • Mountain bikes (to those who have requested them)
  • Van transportation from the store to the trailhead and back
  • Park entrance fees for riders in the REI Outdoor School van

No rider will be left behind!
