Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
I use my eTrex Legend both professionally and recreationally, and like its compact size. It does everything you really need from a pocket GPS, and I don't find the lack of a color display or extensive maps much of a problem because if you're doing anything more than driving down the interstate you should always have a real map and compass with you! My primary use is to find UTM coordinates so that I can locate myself on a map, and also to store locations where I've made measurements, taken samples, etc. As a professional who makes his living working with maps, I've never had much use for the route or navigation capabilities on any GPS. Weaknesses of this model include the patch antenna (poor reception in forests) and small UTM coordinate display that is difficult to read with my middle aged eyes. Like all GPS units I've used, the menus are poorly organized and difficult to navigate. It's average in that regard. It would be great if somebody would make a GPS with an iPhone-like interface!

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
This was my second GPS. I purchased the eTrex legend soon after it came out after using a friend’s legend. It has not let me down; it is very durable and easy to use. It has traveled with me and only had a minor problem acquiring satellites while I was overseas and once again when I came back to the US. This was not a big deal, I just left it outside for a bit and it acquired the satellites. After about 5 to 6 years the screen finally gave out (lines and flickering also) and I upgraded to a color version of the legend. Since I do not hike much in the mountains I opted not to get the Vista, also not a fan yet of electronic compasses. Con; battery life is short if you play around with the features. Also it may have trouble acquiring a satellite if the canopy is thick. Have to agree with other reviews about the serial port, it can be a pain to use.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
Bought this when it first came out and it's been trouble free since then. Very easy on the batteries, as accurate as much more expensive units. I use it at work all the time. A little slow the first time you use it in an area, but faster than my boss' Magellan. I've dropped it tons of times, from as much as 10 feet onto hard ground and it still works fine. My only complaints are that the little joystick thing is sometimes quirky to use (doesn't always move right away), and that the display is hard to read (but part of that is my problem since my eyes are doing that older than I feel thing).

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
the fatal flaw with this (and other lower end Etrex units) is the poor satellite reception. it struggles with any kind of canopy or canyon terrain. these things are immensely popular with the general populus - you'll read many positive reviews about how compact, cute and user friendly it is. but if you can't keep a satellite lock, what's the point? i replaced my Lengend with a Magellan Explorist (love/hate relationship). the Legend is superior in almost every way *except* the reception, where the Magellan beats it handily.
if you want the best in reception, you have to step up to a unit that sports the Sirfstar chipset.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
This is a great basic GPS unit. Have used it hiking/backpacking, geocaching, and in the car in a pinch while traveling. I'm neither savvy or challenged when it comes to technology, but this unit is certainly user friendly. Had my niece and nephew using it within minutes while geocaching this past summer. The cover is water resistant and the battery usage is nominal. Great product for the price.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
The Legend is a great basic GPS. It has very easy menus, it aquires quickly and it does well in moderate tree cover. Be aware that this is a BASIC model though -- only 10 characters for your waypoint names, only capital letters, no fancy characters, etc. Basic. But it's durable, IPX-7 waterproof and it doesn't go thru batteries very fast, even in WAAS mode. One gripe: the "hook it up to your computer" option uses a serial port connection -- most computers don't have serial ports anymore. This means you have to go to [...] or wherever to get a serial-to-USB converter and this will run you another $20-$40 on top of the [...] you just spent on the proprietary Garmin cable. Long story short, if you plan on doing a lot of waypoint downloading and map uploading, etc., get one of the more modern models that has a USB connector -- the cost of the step up will be about the same as the cost of the extra cables.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
I find that as a casual user, the features you get for the price of this unit are exceptional. There are other GPS units that provide more features such as Color - voice - directions - etc. Those features would be nice, but only add cost. I would recommend getting the additional Maps CD that provide more detailed maps and route planning etc. Great unit. I use it for hiking, camping, vacationing, and fishing. It is great for marking a spot in a lake or river that you want to return to.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
I have 2 of these GPS units one that I have had 5 years and one that my parents gave me a year ago because they didn't like it's poor reception and they found it complicated to use. In any kind of tree cover they both have great difficulty picking up satellites. Another problem that they both have is that the screen often flickers and gets lines across it then quits working all together. When I take the batteries out it starts working again. I thought I had just got a bad one, but after having a second one do the same thing it just must be a flaw in the product. I have used 2 other GPS units by another manufacturer and found them to get much better satelite reception, and better accuracy. This GPS works ok out on the water because there is a clear view of the sky, but for anything else there are much better products out there.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
This was the first GPS unit I owned. I have used it for 2+ years and it has never let me down. For a beginner, the 8mb of memory is sufficient. As you get more experienced with GPS use, additonal memory for maps and data becomes more critical. I was so impressd with the quality and dependablity of this unit, that when I was ready to purchase a more advanced device (more memory and a color screen), that I stayed with Garmin and purchased the LegendCx.

Comments about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS:
This is not a top of the line GPS, but for the money you spend this is an excellent buy. Spend a short amount of time playing with it and you will have it figured out. While it may not be as powerful as other units, i have done everything from geocaching with it to extended hunting trips near the north slope of alaska and have never been let down. If you are looking for something flashy - this is not the GPS for you, but if you want simple and reliable, it is a very sound GPS.
