Comments about Black Diamond Icon Polar Headlamp:
Bought this in prep for the early am summit pushes. Light super bright and would illuminate ice field for quite a distance ahead. Carried extra AA batteries in case, but based on specs and dialed down lighting as needed, i doubted i'd need spares. Adjustable brightness on all LEDs works like a charm. The 4 AA battery case stayed warm in jacket pocket, but the price for long battery life and brightness is the bulky case. That and the tangle of wiring didnt feel like an issue once all situated, but took longer to get it all together as opposed to, say ..a single unit on helmet.
The huge Cons for this headlamp was that it basically quit working 2 hours into climb. I was on Ice climbing section and after a few flickers, it was all out and I climbed in the moonlight, dodging crevasses. Once on stable ground, replaced batteries to no avail, which i re-tried unsuccessfully once back home. Its a BD lamp bought from REI so I was advised to return it. I now await either a new one or more likely will opt for the PT apex LED.
Bottom line, fantastic lamp, if you can find assurance that it wont quit on u after a couple hrs of easy use. I'd recommend it, but await confirmation on whether this was a 'one lamp defect' or a systemic issue with this line.
