Bought these back about 6-7 months ago and had a chance to run them through a Michigan winter. The boots are very lightweight which was a plus as nobody wants to haul around heavy boots in the snow. The fit was a little tight/narrow despite going a half size larger than I normally do to account for thicker socks. Not a deal breaker as they eventually broke in and loosened up. The downside was the lack of moisture protection despite being Gore-tex and waterproof/resistant. Even in slushy snow only 3"-4" deep my socks got wet after an hour or so of hiking and disc golfing. I even picked up some gaiters from REI thinking maybe snow got in from the top, but the problem persisted. A little disappointed they did not offer me better moisture protection from the snow. Still a solid, lightweight boot for dry hikes and trails. Just not a top notch boot that can withstand puddles and snow. Not sure I would recommend them to friends if water/snow is in play.

My old experience with hiking boots is dated by a good solid decade – for this price, I'm used to getting uncomfortable boots that need breaking in, better inserts, and the like. I went into the store to try these on based on other reviews, and I was shocked. These are easily the most comfortable shoes – not just hiking shoes, but shoes overall – that I've owned. Right out of the box, they were super comfortable, and I've taken to wearing them every day, even to work. Planning on geocaching this weekend, and my first hike in them in two weeks. I don't expect to be disappointed, but I'll update my review once I've taken these beauties off-road.

My perspective: I am the pickiest of boot buyers, I am loathe to buy without a return-policy. I am the guy that tries on every boot in the store and 80% of the time leaves without making a purchase. I know what works for me, what a good fit is, and have over 15 years of trail running, backpacking, rock, and alpine climbing experience. I only take time to write reviews for exceptionally good or bad products. I decided to take only these boots with me for a trip to Patagonia. I thought their lightness and thin material would do me well since they can dry out faster than a full leather boot. I was more than right! -Break in: A quick climb up to the lookout at Mount Pilchuck. Fall snow melt and refreezing led to a very icy trail. This trail is laced with rocks and small boulders. I had no traction device with me. They gripped surprisingly well on the rougher ice spots and dry boulders. - The Wringer: Patagonia's Torres del Paine for 7 days on the Circuit Trek. 77 miles, 14,000 ft gain/loss, ~40 lb pack. Hard pack trail, scree, boulder fields, shallow stream crossings, slick mud, Spring firm-to-soft snow climbing, trail runnning down the Valle de Frances, Typical 40-50 MPH gusting up to 80+ MPH winds. This boot did it all, kept my feet dry, relatively blister free, no foot pain, stuck to the trail. - Stretching their design limits: Volcan Villarica in Chile's Lake District. The snow conditions were a very hard wind crust. It requires strap-on crampons. Even though this is a very flexible boot and lacks a shank as far as I can tell, my crampons stayed on snugly. If I had to kick steps in softer snow for 3,500 feet of climbing, they would be less than ideal in terms of stability and calf-strain I am certain. Summary: Fast break-in, Lightweight, very agile, can run in them quite well, sticks to the trail and boulder hopping. Not so great on wet rock (compared to a vibram sole with thicker lugs and a "climbing zone") Toe box is roomy but the toe-gaurd is not meant for kicking rocks. Round laces come untied fairly easily-replace with flat laces. Lacing system is decent, no pressure points. Durable so far after a few hundred miles. Nothing unglued, ripped, or punctured, gore-tex lining is solid. Gore-tex kept feet a bit damp from sweating. Stepping in water did not soak boot. Tend to breathe not as well as some other gore-tex boots. After Torres del Paine, the footbeds developed an exceptionally rank odor. I suspect it was from plunging into some deep mud. Will see if I can clear it up with some dr. scholes and baking soda. Never had my boots smell so bad before! Feet rarely got cold even on a glacier with 50 MPH winds. Zero arch pain! MY favorite boot, EVER. Paired with half-length gaiters and traction devices, you can really stretch the limits of their intended use. Will see how they do with snowshoes if we ever get any snow base here in Washington this year!

My initial impressions are mixed. They are light weight and appear well-made and rugged. The issue I have with them is that they don't seem made for a normal human foot, more like a ballerina's foot. If I had to guess, I'd say they are a "C" width, maybe "B". It is unfortunate that these boots are only offered in even numeric sizes and one width. I'll see if they break in any better than first impressions.

I was really happy when I tried on these boots. The flexible sole gave the boot a sneaker-like feel, something that's incredibly important to me since I prefer to wear minimalist shoes when hiking. Since sneakers aren't a viable option in wintery conditions, I chose these boots since they were so comfortable and light. Unfortunately, the heels are about an inch longer than average, making them incompatible with most gaiters. This was incredibly disappointing since I loved the boots so much. If the heel were closer to the standard length, they would immediately become my go-to boot.

Initially I wanted to buy a pair of comfortable and very light weight hiking boots, waterproof and breathable that would be carried in a bicycle pannier around Chile/Argentina and not really used until taking time off to hike around Patagonia. These fit the bill. They are as light as my bike shoes (IQ) with SPD. But then I thought why not dump the cycle shoes, the waterproof covers and the SPD pedals and just use good flat pedals and these boots for the cycling as well? So that's what I'm doing as I found these superb for cycling in as well. Couldn't be happier and now I only lug round one pair of footwear for multi-task duties.
