I love this little lantern. Easy to set up, easy to light, gives off good light. One word of caution, careful with leaving in a warm car. It can make the spring function to push the candle up difficult. Otherwise, this is a great lantern. Simple is the best word.

One other word of caution, in a heavy swirling wind, there is some difficulty in staying lit. Shielding the top vent solves to problem. As an emergency light when the power is out, top notch.

For camping, not heavy, gives good "psychological" light. There is just something about a flame that lifts the spirits.

We've had the original one that REI made back 12 years ago and still use it! keeps the tent warm at night and it is cute how the light shines in the little flame. Great one to have in a cool summer night or winter as well.

This is truly an essential piece of kit. Provides warmth and light, is safe to use in any type of shelter, and the candle can be used as a fire starer in virtually any weather.

We use our single burner lantern in the tent as a heater, it keeps the tent toasty warm and dry inside. Keeps water vapour from condensing inside the tent. Its a shame that the REI doesn't sell the acessory reflectors that concentrate light where its wanted.

We also have the 3 burner candelier which we use car camping, Summertime we load it with citronella candles, set it on a picnic table and light it up at dusk, it gives nice ambiance and sufficient light around the campsite without excessive light pollution. Additionally it generates a sufficient amount of heat to perc coffee or make tea for the evening.

While the single burner can be safely used in a tent, the 3 burner gets to hot and we leave it outside.

I'm surprised no one has written a review for this product. I would think that any backpacker would have one of these, but with the advancement of LED technology, I can see how this item can become obsolete.

I used to adore these lanterns when I was a kid (LEDs weren't too "along" back then), and after I broke my first one, I had the dickens trying to find another one. Now that I've gotten my grubby paws on one, I sensed a little disappointment (Thank you, LEDs).

The lantern, itself, is pretty straight forward, and does a good job. I carry one around, in my pack, as an alternate source of light when hiking or cave exploring (Muultiple light sources are usually needed, and this one is mainly an excuse just to get by). In all honesty, it does what it does. I usually replace the regular candles with beeswax inserts, which last a few hours longer and smell great (Although they cost a bit more). The lantern produces a fair amount of light, for using candles, and should you not have batteries, it can be a really handy item.

The only downside I've seen with these (Aside from light issues) is that the candles like to melt at weird angles, sometimes. Aside from that, these are great little lanterns to carry around for those "Just in case" moments. :)
