    • Lightweight spring steel frame supports a gear-heavy outing, and it responds well to the movement of skiing and riding
    • Top lid pocket can hold snow-study tools and small items; outside of pocket features a bungee system for lashing on climbing skins or extra clothing
    • A-frame ski-carrying system accommodates wide skis and bulky bindings and carries a snowboard vertically; straps tuck away
    • Zippered back panel entry lets you access your gear and hydration reservoir (not included), even with your skis or board attached
    • Back panel material sheds snow and dries quickly
    • Hydration pocket is designed to accept most hydration reservoirs, reservoir not included
    • Insulated sleeve on shoulder strap stores the hydration hose to help prevent freeze-up and is large enough to accommodate right-angle shut-off valves
    • Flip back the top lid to access main compartment with room for safety essentials, food and extra layers
    • Inside the main compartment you'll find a clear accessory pocket and a tool sleeve for a probe or snow saw
    • Front pleated outside pocket is sized for a shovel and other avalanche gear, and it can be used as a stash pocket for climbing skins
    • Pocket offers enough room for a shovel blade, a shovel handle and a probe
    • Tarpaulin liner in pocket resists moisture and abrasion
    • Snow-resistant buckle closure is used on the front flap opening
    • Mesh sling zips out to carry your helmet on the trip up and tucks away when not in use; redesigned sling makes it easy to stash small items in nearby pocket
    • Hipbelt snugs comfortably to help distribute weight to your hips, not your back; hipbelt features a right-side pocket for easy access to small items
    • Hipbelt webbing system adjusts with a forward pull, creating a secure, ergonomic fit
    • Compression straps help stabilize gear for security and comfortable carriage
    • Snow-specific buckles are designed to work well with gloves on and to prevent clogging with snow

REI Double Diamond 50 Snow Pack is rated 3.6667 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from great pack As with another reviewer, this is my third iteration on this pack. The first two had main zipper failures, and it appears this revision finally has more robustness in that area. I would give it 5 stars, but I'm holding off until I see how well this zipper holds up. I've looked at replacing it with another brand, but I always come back to the REI Double Diamond due to all the other great things about it. The pack is comfortable, skis well and holds plenty of gear. The avy tool pocket carries my shovel, probe, snow saw and crampons. Size-wise, I've fit BD and K2 shovels. It does not have dedicated diagonal ski carry loops, which I prefer, but the snowboard straps work instead. I really appreciate the panel access in addition to the zipper on top. The helmet net is nice, but generally I just keep mine in the pack itself. Not the lightest pack out there, but it's not unreasonably heavy given the capacity and features included.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sizes Needed I have been wanting to replace my old backpack with something lighter that also would give me quick access to my shovel without digging through the main pocket. This pack has all of the features I am looking for, the exterior avalanche tool pocket, A-frame ski carry system, and 50L capacity. Unfortunately I tried it on in the store and it is simply not long enough to fit my 6'4" frame. The shoulder straps were fully extended and barely reached my armpits. Please make multiple sizes for the backpacks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better and better This is (at least) the third iteration of REI's Double Diamond 50, and the third I've owned. I mostly use it skiing, but it was a great option as my only pack for a 8-day in kauai and worked great for that. Its smaller than airplane regs for a carry-on, too. Design flaws present on the previous 2 versions have been fixed- better zippers (previously "waterproof" but very difficult to move and immediately prone to excess wear) and a flawed suspension (sharp ends on the "hoop" suspension blew out the bottom on previous pack) are much more durable. If color mattered I'd dock a star for the odd yeller color, but who cares about that. It could be a few oz lighter, but the versatility it offers for carrying skis, snowboard, avie gear, camera gear and pretty much anything else (as well as back panel access) makes it well worth it. Very comfy suspension and great hipbelt. The only remaining beef I have with it carries over from the previous pack- a waistbelt that can't be cinched any tighter than 31" or so. My waist is bigger than that, but when my pack's loaded with heavy photo gear I like to really crank it down, but I'm maxed out against the buckle before I get it tight enough for descents or tricky sections. All in all, REI's put together a very good winter touring pack here. Plus, as with any REI brand product, the ease of warranty service is unparalleled.
