We used this panel to keep 4 camera and 2 phone batteries charged while in Africa. It worked great even with low sunlight.

Comments about Brunton Explorer2 Solar Panel:

I purchased this unit for a week-long camping trip with the expectation that my group would use it to keep our cell phones operable out in the woods.

I liked the fact that it does not have an internal battery, which keeps the weight down somewhat, but it's not exactly light, so consider that if this is a backpacking purchase.

Once on our trip, we set out the panels on a cloudless 80-degree day in direct sunlight and plugged in a Droid smart phone. The phone indicated it was charging and everything looked good. However, checking back after 4 hours, we discovered the phone had actually lost net charge.

Next, we tried leaving the phone turned off. After a similar 4-5 hour period, the phone showed it had only progressed one bar on its charge scale.

Thinking it was a problem with that phone, we tried numerous other devices over the following days – including an iPhone and a Motorola external battery pack – with exactly the same results.

When we returned from our trip, I contacted Brunton through its customer service email address listed on its web page to ask if my experience was a normal one.

It's been a week, and I have not heard back. I've also Googled around and found reviews on other sites of people complaining of the same experience, so I'm a bit mystified why this product is being marketed at all - seeing as most people have smart phones these days that require a bit more juice to charge.

Thankfully, the great folks at REI allowed me to return mine without any questions.
