    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about Outdoor Research Alti Mittens:

I primarily trail run (year round) at altitude (9k-14k) and come from an intense mountaineering/climbing background.

I run in these things for 15-20 hour runs through cold, driving wind along the divide in Colorado and in Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. Many of these runs are -15-0 degree F temps, my hands would be dead without them. Sometimes for the beginning + end (ascent + descent to above timberline) they get warm, but I just pull the liner and wear either the shell or the liner alone.

For mountaineering, they're a wonderful travel + camp mitt in adverse conditions. You might be able to negotiate an ascender in them, and they're good for belay work, as the leather is durable + has grip. But they're not a technical climbing glove, remember that :).

The 6 fingers + toes I've frostbitten have never been the same in terms of staying warm, and while I don't have "cold hands" or Raynaud's syndrome, these fingers + toes are the first to get cold + painful in *any group* (even in a tour full of Raynaud's sufferers, I'm pulling out the heavy gear first :).

Anyway, these blow away everything else I tried. I wear them with a very thin liner and they're toasty warm, totally weatherproof, and for what they are (a heavy expedition mitt), incredibly light + maneuverable (but, remember, they're an expedition mitt, you won't be doing brain surgery in these).

I tried a *lot* of other gloves, none came close in warmth or in function. Specifically:

-The idiot straps have large disks to cinch them down to your arms/wrists. Easy to do when one hand is already gloved/mitted. Perfect.

-The gauntlet closure is the same, big, can't miss it, easy to use with gloves on functions.

-The gauntlets are long and fit over plenty of big layers.

-Really well built + comfortable - I like the extra loft on the back + on the thumb. Well thought out.

-New biner loop on the 2012 models is great, works well.

Summary: if you're cold-handed and/or spend a lot of time in extreme (and I mean extreme) conditions doing active things, these are the gloves. I tried the full gamut, and these win. I think they'd work really well for just hanging around in very cold areas, too, but I think you could overheat if you're not perpetually cold handed like me.
