Comments about Arc'teryx Nozone 35 Pack:
I REALLY wanted to love this pack. I cannot fault the flawless quality of the back. Arc'teryx make the most well detailed and sturdy gear. The straps and buckles are all a bit thinner and save weight. The material is light weight, and the grey/yellow color is a really nice combo.
I was very surprised to find this pack was simply too adjustable for me. The removable lid (always a feature I look for) is great, but results in too many additional straps and points of adjustment.
I think my main criticism of the bag is that is didn't function well at all when only partially loaded. It was formless and all the straps are incredibly long, which allows you to accommodate extra gear, which is great, but they get in the way and I think could be a problem getting caught or snagged.
The lid didn't sit as well on the bag as in the photos - the two bumped areas over the aluminum stays were exposed and would likely wear quickly.
Fit:
The bag didn't sit flat/firm against my upper back - Arc'teryx recommend removing the stays and lightly bending them over your thigh to re-curve them to shape. I wasn't sure about this and potentially making the fit worse, so unfortunately had to return this backpack.
That said, if the fit works for you, and you keep this bag at least 3/4 loaded, I think it is probably one of the best lightweight, technical bags out there.

Comments about Arc'teryx Nozone 35 Pack:
I thought the Nozone 35 would be a good upgrade from the (discontinued) Khazri 35, which was a great lightweight alpine climbing pack but tended to collapse when not packed tight. The Nozone replaces the removable foam back pad of the Khazri with a lighter non-removable laminated back panel supplemented by a pair of removable aluminum stays.
I got the Nozone because I thought the aluminum stays would supply the structure that the Khazri lacked. And they do. But, in their current form, they also introduce a painful problem: the stays are too short -- their bottoms do not extend far enough down the lumbar section of the back panel, so the bottom ends of the stays poke into the wearer's back.
If the designers had made the aluminum stays an inch or so longer and extended them that much lower along the back panel, the frame would work great. But with stays that poke into one's back, it is basically impossible to use the hip belt to support any of the weight of the pack.
Of course, one can strip the pack of the aluminum stays completely, and the problem goes away. That solution might work for lots of alpine climbing situations, but then why not just get a Cold Cold World or Wild Things pack instead of a Dead Bird?
I was also disappointed to find that the designers of the Nozone decided to replace the glove-friendly buckles used on the Khazri with old-style pinch buckles.
In summary: the Nozone 35 is frustratingly close to being a really good lightweight alpine climbing pack, but I would recommend waiting for Revision 1.1 or, if you cannot wait, get one of the tried-and-true soft packs from one of the small pack makers in New Hampshire.
