Comments about The North Face Bastion 4 Tent:
I'm too old to have to low crawl out of my backpacking tent. This is fantastic! The only thing that's missing is indoor plumbiing.
Service and delivery comments:
Bought it through REI so service was the best.

Comments about The North Face Bastion 4 Tent:
This tent replaced our 15 year old 3 person Walrus multi-day base camp tent, and is an awesome improvement.
It is wide enough and vertical enough not to be hitting my head, feet, and hands on the tent walls while sleeping! It is tall enough to sit upright comfortably and still have lanterns and clothes lines above your head.
The little things are the unexpected joys of this tent. The zipper pulls are all glow in the dark. The guy lines and many of the reinforcement tabs on the fly are reflective, so no more excuse for tripping over the guy lines at night. There are 12 mesh pockets on the inside, so everybody has plenty of space for keeping their gear organized. There are over a dozen attachment points for cord or lanterns. The poles all have plastic inserts to avoid damaging the pole sections when assembling them.
The front vestibule is large enough for ~3 packs, while the rear is large enough for ~2 packs.
The vestibule area of the fly has extensions near the ground, to provide rain/snow protection all the way to the ground. In windy conditions these extensions can be weighted down with stones/dirt/snow, but still blow open.
The ventilation is good. Occasionally we have condensation on the inside of the fly, but it has never caused a problem inside the tent. The roof vents combined with the vestibule vents provides sufficient ventilation.
Setting it up is simple. The poles are color coded and slide easily through the pole sleeves. The tent does not need to be staked out, but the door zippers work slightly better if the points near the door are. The fly goes on easy, and if needed there are additional velcro straps to attach the fly to the poles. If it is not windy, then simply attaching the fly at the 8 pole ends and staking out the vestibules is enough.
Taking the tent down is a bit more difficult, until one learns to push the poles through the sleeves, instead of pulling them.
The tent and vestibule doors are large and easy to enter/exit through.
The tent doors have both a fabric and mesh door. It would be nice if the fabric door was on the inside, so one didn't need to open the mesh door to close up the fabric door! Insects love this feature!
The two biggest downsides are the weight and bulk. With the footprint and sand/snow anchors, the tent is ~16.6lbs.
The tent costs a lot, but I believe it is worth it.
Service and delivery comments:
As normal, REI's delivery was prompt and the gear arrived in excellent condition.

Comments about The North Face Bastion 4 Tent:
Have only set it up in the living room so far. I was happy with the innards. Unhappy that I had to pay extra for the gear loft: At this price point shouldn't that be included?

Comments about The North Face Bastion 4 Tent:
I have been looking for a "true" 4 season tent for 4 persons for a very long time. So long, in fact, that my friends make fun of me and believe that I am insatiable.
For starters shouldn't a 4 season tent have zippable covers for the mesh windows? Good luck finding one until now! I tent mostly in the Sierras and Cascades and when it blows 40+ to 80+ mph, the wind goes between the fly and tent and then into the mesh windows on any other tent. And if you're trying to keep heat in at night, you don't want mesh. It gets very cold and uncomfortable. This tent, not a problem with the zippable covers.
As an engineer, I like the pole design and layout as it provides a very, very strong structure while remaining light. The front vestibule is well protected and provides ample space for packs. It also includes about a 5" clear window between the two front mounted doors on the vestibule to see the weather conditions outside without leaving the comfort of your sleeping bag. It is roomy and comfortable inside with plenty of pockets. The fly velcros onto the tent in numerous spots as well as going through the grommets on the poles. The fly has zippable windows to allow air flow thru to the tent mesh windows and the geniuses at The North Face even included a little prop to make sure the fly window stays open to maximize air flow. The tent comes with sand/snow bags to secure the tent if stakes are not possible. The shape of the tent/fly suits it very well to deflecting strong wind gusts.
We plan to use the tent for car camping to backpacking to mountaineering as it provides the creature comforts while providing a high-end mountaineering design. Haven't used it yet to provide a full review, but have set it up outside just to see what it has. Love this tent already!!!
