The materials are comfortable and durable. The stitching, pockets, zippers, buttons, etc., all seem to be high quality. The fit is just a little off, at least for my body. The 36" waist that I normally wear is a little tight, but not so tight that I would move up to a 38". The crotch is also a little short making them somewhat uncomfortable. They are a little too heavy to be tropic wear type clothing, but they seem fine for a little cooler weather.

Bought these at a REI used gear sale. I really love the "shorts" (w/o the legs zipped on). A slightly shorter inseam and fitted feel, rather than the (currently) typical long (past the knees) and loose style of shorts. I'm a big guy (235, but down from 360!) so I don't look like the model in the pictures, but a 36 fits well (though I'm in a 34 in others pants, so these seem to run small) and if I must say, looks pretty good. More important than the look, they feel and wear fantastic. Spandex is not listed in the material, but they have a tiny bit of give which I really like. Pockets are very well laid out.

I'm not so happy about the zip on lower legs. The zipper hits the leg/knee in a manner I find annoying. I wouldn't want to hike with the lower legs on, but they might be OK about camp.

The "shorts" are exceptional, They are my "go to" choice for hiking (I do about 20 miles / week so they get a lot of use). I give it a 4 due to not liking the zip on legs, and the price (e-gads!)

I spent a long time finding 34" inseam convertable hiking pants. Not many fit well, or are true to length. I tried on the Kuhl Liberator in the store and loved the fit. The length was perfect and waist was right on. I took these on a camping/hiking trip a few weeks after purchase. The morning was chilly, so I started with full length. Half way through the second mile, it started to warm up. The bottoms unzipped very easily from the knee area. They zip up enough to be able to slip them over your boot. The fabric is tough and comfortable. They felt good through the first 12 miles. I've used them for much more hiking throughout the year. They are still in great shape and comfortable.

"When you pack gear that does double duty, you save weight and hike farther. Duh. But when multi-tasking efficiency has been applied to the pants-converting-into-shorts category, we've found the benefit offset by the dork factor. Until now. The Liberator has a trim, mountain-town style that slyly masks the two-in-one design. Mobility-enhancing spandex strips mimic the zipper lines, so they stand out less, and small slots swallow the zipper pulls. And for hiker who say the backcountry is no place to worry about looks—that function always trumps form—don't worry: The Liberator also packs a best-in-class array of clever technical features. The fabric is 77 percent nylon and 23% cotton—the nylon is next to the skin, and the cotton is on the outer surface, lending a softer feel and greater durability, "If there's a lag in dry time, I can't tell," says one tester after wetting the lower legs during an early-winter creek crossing. "And there are no signs of wear, snags or pilling after four months of regular use." A gusseted crotch and thin, horizontal bands of spandex above the back pockets and below the articulated knees ensure flexibility for high stepping and crouching. Spandex backing on every pocket securely cradles items stowed there, decreasing flop and sway. Transitioning from pants to shorts and back takes a minute or less, thanks to a foot-long, snap-closed cuff zipper that fits over all but the biggest winter or alpine boots our testers wore.
