Comments about Garmin Astro 320 GPS:

We bought this unit's predecessor after our two-year old dog ran off after a mountain goat during a backpacking trip. After a full day plus of searching, we gave up and hiked out. After 8 days, our dog miraculously appeared at the trailhead. The $500 price tag has more than paid for itself with peace of mind. (We have used our unit for over 3 years.)
We use this unit on our backpacking trips, dayhikes, walking in big park, and even around home. We are semi-rural, and can let our dog roam while we work in the garden. Just a look at the unit, and it tells how many yards away she is in what direction (or shows it on a map). It works from inside the house, too. Open the door, let the dog out, and you know where she is.
Battery life for the dog collar is impressive; typically, we'll have to change batteries after the 3rd day on a backpack, or recharge after a couple weeks of roaming outside the home. (Changing the battery inside the collar is not user friendly; recharging is easy.) The base unit can be used as a stand-alone GPS, so one unit serves a dual purpose.
Originally, this seemed to be marketed to hunters, not the typical REI crowd, but our experience shows it can have real value for anyone with an adventuresome dog!
