Been back packing over 30 years. Ultralight packing for over 10.
Boght these appropriately size with extra toe room. Salomon's run a bit narrow though.
Light weight. Good torsional stiffness. Used them on a 12 mile RT hike up Mt. Hood's McNeil Point. Only carrying less than 10 pounds.
Fine going up. Good foot pro from trail, but very poor lacing design to hold the foot where you want it. Started feeling it on the downhill during the last four miles. Lacing does not retain a firm hold around the arch to stabilize your foot.
Next day, I'm getting a black and blue toe nail. Don't know if I'm going to lose it yet. Would not recommend it after this. Would not recommend for steeper trails. Maybe ok for general trail running on flats.
Waste of money...but REI gladly refunded money. So glad I didn't buy these elsewhere.

I purchased these shoes Oct. 31, 2011 and by the end of December they were wearing out as well as ripping & something strange happening to the left shoe heal. It almost felt like an air buble exploded in the heal and every step would creat a squeak as well as a strange feeling every time I stepped down. The tearing happened on both shoes and on both sides of the toe area and thus allowing leakage to happen. Just really disappointed with this purchase.

I purchased the shoes with some hesitation. Having some freeze bit from years age, I've always had to use toe warmers. I carried the toe warmers in the event that I would need them. The weather was 17degrees and I completed my 10 miles in comfort and never had to use the toe warmers. Now, that's a gift.

I have never had a pair of shoes create blisters so quickly. Less than 1.5 hours of wear on a moderate hike resulted in a dime size blister on both heels. Only one mile in and I was ready to go barefoot the rest of the way. I was very disappointed as the shoes are well built and I was looking forward to wearing these often. For a price this high it was a big disappointment.

I needed a pair of waterproof sneakers I could use at least four times a day to walk my dog in in the fall, winter, and spring when there was rain, mud, or low amounts of snow. My Vizsla likes to be out for at least 45 min at a time, so I needed something that would wear well, be high enough to keep water out, and keep my feet warm, yet not make my feet exhausted traipsing all over different terrain. These are awesome; I would have given five stars except I had a three week breaking-in period where I had blisters on the back of my achilles, but after that, the shoes seemed to form to my foot, like a sock. Would DEFINITELY buy them again; great to wear with SmartWool cushioned socks.

i have had these for less than a month. the 1st time there was a little snow, they did not feel right. why is the tip of my toes cold/damp? um & why do my feet smell? Really.. so the snow went any way till 2days ago mind you less than 2in of snow. ok so my foot was again cold & damp.. so i looked inside they felt a little damp @ the tip.. ok so i took out the sole & come to find the blue was half wet. i am sad to write this, i really hope that it is just this pair. but i Am returning them for something else. i will try them in a year.. i really miss my xa-comp . i wish they were new..i just don't recommend this pair..

I thought these shoes looked great, and thought I bought the right size. I normally wear a 10 but bought a 9.5 after trying on the 9. They felt great, until I had to walk down hill. My heel kept lifting out, so I tried my sports orthotics. That made it worse because of the insert already in the shoe, so then I tried really tightening the laces. No matter what I did, they felt too loose and I developed a terrible blister on the back of my heel after several wearings, so they went back to REI. I was so hopeful these would work, because it's hard to find waterproof trail shoes. I wish they made these in narrow and with normal laces instead of the slip mechanism. I would recommend if you have wide feet, as my husband bought a mens pair and he loves his.
