Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

I got this as a Christmas present from my sister. It was definitely a great gift! The perfect use is for car camping, but you can pack it in your backpack and travel the world. I brought it with me to Australia and now it is in my kitchen in Thailand. It keeps coffee hot for a really long time and the double filters keep out coffee grinds. It is a bit big and bulky but it does make really good coffee. The only improvement I would make is to have a collapsible handle so it could be more travel friendly.

Works great. Brewed up a wonderful cup of Joe and I couldn't have been more pleased with the product. I was particularly impressed with how tight the seal was on the plunger even though it was plastic. Would highly recommend.

Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

I bought this 32 oz. REI Coffee Press to use in my Off-the-Grid Cabin home. I boil water on my wood stove to use for it.

The 1st Press arrived quickly but had a big dent on the bottom front edge of the Pot, directly on the opposite side of the handle. Interestingly, the box it arrived in was not damaged at all. The Press would not sit flat on a table because of the dent, so I contacted REI & they corrected the situation very quickly. The second Press arrived dent free! (But, that 1st Press still made me wonder about durability, so don't drop it!)

Anyway, as for usage...I found that to get the hottest coffee, I needed to pre-warm the Press Pot 1st! I rinse the Pot & then fill it with boiling water for a few minutes as I boil up some more water for my actual coffee. After pre-warming, I dump that water out & put in my ground coffee. Then I slowly pour in fresh, boiling water to about half way. I stir to make sure all the coffee is wet & then pour the rest of the boiling water in. I put the lid on, (plunger up of course) & then I let the Press sit for 8 to 10 minutes cuz I like stronger coffee. I also wrap a towel around the outside of the Pot to help keep it hot. When time is up, I slowly press down the plunger & then enjoy a nice, hot, fresh brew.

This Press pours very nicely with no dripping & there is even a screen at the spout that catches any "escaped" coffee grounds that got through the plunger mesh. The handle has a nice feel & size to it, even when using gloves on cold mornings.

Cleaning up this Press is another story! I would be hesitant to take this Press camping if I were going somewhere where I'd be short on water! I really think this Press is best for home/cabin/RV usage & at campsites that have running water available!

I am happy with this Press because it does keep my coffee warmer & is more durable then the glass Presses. My boyfriend kept breaking all my delicate glass coffee presses, so then I'd have to resort to old fashioned "cowboy" coffee until I could get back down to town to buy a new one!

The Press Plunger does seem a bit on the delicate side, so be very careful with it. A new replacement from the manufacture will cost ya quite a bit!

The Press & all it's parts are made in China, although the company that "produces" these for REI is based in Missoula, Montana!

Also, the bottom of the Press has a rubber insert, handy for keeping it from slipping off a rock or something, but you would not want to sit this Press on anything hot. That was sort of a draw back for me as I had figured on being able to set the Press on the corner of my wood stove to help keep the coffee warm enough for my second cup!

All in all, its a very nice Press & way better then any of the thin walled, glass Presses out there.

Thanks for reading, now go enjoy a hot cup of fresh pressed java!

              Service and delivery comments:

I received my 1st Press very quickly but, it was damaged. The shipping box was not damaged at all but the Press was not wrapped very well & there was no packing material inside the box to protect it. I contacted REI & they corrected the situation very quickly. The 2nd Press arrived fast too & in fine condition as it was wrapped & packaged very well. Customer service was very helpful & apologetic for me getting a damaged one.

Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

The mesh at the pour spout is great for keeping out grounds but it also impeeds the flow, it gets clogged with grounds and I have to keep tipping it back and forth to get any coffee out. Coffee drips out of the rim when pouring, the seal seems to have failed. I've only used it for a month. It does keep coffee really hot though. It would be great if it could be put on a burner to heat up water.

Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

The metallic bottom leaves one to believe you could place this on a stove to heat water with. I had been looking for a larger pot I could both heat water with and use for making coffee. Jetboil makes one but you have to buy the whole stove assembly too.

I thought REI had come out with a great product when I saw this online, but seeing it in the store - it has a rubber pad on the bottom, and it appears that the bottom is insulated as well, so it would not be good for heating. It's not even dishwasher safe, so external heat applied to it would definitely be a bad idea.

Maybe REI will revise the design, so you don't have to carry a separate pot just for heating water (hint hint). But, for now, this won't do both.

Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

Took this car camping and made some very smooth and robust coffee after a cold night in the tent. Hit the spot! Love the additional screen in the spout which seems to catch all of the course ground coffee. You get a little coffee dust at the bottom of your cup, but it is much more efficient than your average french press. Actually made better coffee my first time in this at the campsite than I do at home with a glass press. Keeps it very warm too. Like another reviewer stated, there is no markings so you should know your pre-measured coffee and water ratio with the gear you bring. Good thing about the press is that if you make it too strong, just add more hot water to your cup like an "Americano" until you get what you want. Easy to clean too! If you are a coffee junky, and there are more than 2 of you, I would get the 48oz, as my wife and I easily drained our first full pot.

Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

Several years back, I purchased one of the REI Double Shot mug/press. I found it to be an excellent French Press, but found it uncomfortable, and time consuming, to make that second cup....Enter the REI 32 oz. Table Top French Press!

This press carries on the excellent design of the Double Shot, with added improvements.

The press screen, like on the Double Shot, is likewise, of fine mesh, doing a near perfect job of keeping all but the finest of particles out of the poured drink. The top has a flexable, good sized seal. And the spout is simi-curved, and points the coffee stream where you want it to go. The handle is strong, and appears, like the Double Shot's, to be well secured to the mug.

I have used this press many times now, at home, and have zero complaints!
I will be taking this on all my car camping trips, as well as to any motel stays that I will be arranging.

If you enjoy French Press coffee, and do not want the bad taste of instant coffee, or the hassle of motelling with an table top coffe maker, then you will be most happy with this REI product.

Comments about REI Table Top French Coffee Press - 32 fl. oz.:

We were very impressed by this coffee pot on our recent family camping trip. It is simple to use and it makes terrific coffee. The double screening process really works. The only downside was we wished we had the bigger pot. The 32 oz size would be good for two coffee drinkers in our family. We used 4-5 heaping tablespoons of coarse ground coffee and it was so smooth. Like others have mentioned, I'm thinking of using this at home.
