Comments about 686 Smarty Original Cargo 3-in-1 Insulated Pants - Men's:

I had a pair of older Smarty pants that rocked and lasted for at least 75 days on the mountain (spread over the course of four years), and I just ordered these to serve as replacement for my worn out pair. They seem nice, however I am noticing immediately a number of areas where 686 has cut costs on materials and assembly. The stitching, though acceptable, is not a great. The shell material does not seem as durable as my old ones. The butt pocket is only closable with a velcro flap instead of a zipper with a velcro flap (hope you like a wet wallet). The boot gaiter is no longer adjustable and is made of far lower quality nylon than before. The interior mesh lining is not as nice, nor does it extend through the length of the pants.To be fair, they really do still seem like decent pants, and if I didn't have the old pair to compare them to, I probably wouldn't be moaning so much. That said, I am going to keep them to see if they hold up, and for [$] they better, or it is return city.Can only give three stars because I think cutting corners on craftsmanship is a naughty thing to do.One more thing, if you do get these, think about ordering a size down or trying a pair on first. They run big. I am 5'10" 160 lbs and the smalls fit just right.
