Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I've worn Solomon trail running shoes and loved them. I bought these solely on my past experience. Boy was a disappointed. I wore them for a couple days for casual walks before heading to Colorado to summit a few 14ers. After two days of hiking in Colorado the top lace strap on one shoe broke due to me having to repeatedly tug on the lace to cinch it tight. The kevlar lacing system wouldn't hold tight as I hiked up steep trails (only class 1 and 2). So not only did the laces not hold tight but the fabric "eyelet" broke loose making the laces impossible to hold tight. Fortunately I carried a pair of spare boot laces and was able to work them into the eyelets and re-lace the shoe. It wasn't a perfect fix since I could no longer make use of the top eyelet but better than the kevlar laces.
The bottom line is the lacing system stinks and is more a marketing gimmick. Looks cool, but not functional when you need it. You can't mix plastic with kevlar...the constant friction between the kevlar and plastic as a result of tightening and loosening the laces wears away at the plastic and before long the plastic cinch thing (don't know what to call it) just won't hold tight.
So the kevlar lacing system isn't good for a hiking shoe that needs to be cinched tight and must undergo steep inclines and ankle flexing when climbing. It simply doesn't hold under tension...like a good old fashion shoe lace does.
I've learned to look closely at the lacing system and in particular the eyelets. If the eyelet material is separate from the shoe upper (e.g. fabric loop sewn to the upper) steer clear. Look at how the eyelets are attached on this shoe for example. The first pair of three eyelets (starting from the bottom) are ideal because they are all integrated as part of the shoe material (upper). Then look at the top pair of eyelets and see how they are made as a loop of fabric sewn to the upper. It's a mater of a short time before the fabric or thread wear out and break. For me it took only a few days of typical walking/hiking.
These shoes shine in every other way. If the lacing system on these shoes were of the more traditional type with strong eyelets these shoes would be AWESOME.
If these shoes weren't so expensive they might be worth buying anyways and replacing the kevlar laces with good leather boot laces.
Needless to say these are headed back to the store.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I purchased these wanting a water proof running/hiking shoe. They looked nice and fit ok when I tried them on in the store. Upon wearing these shoes around the house for a couple hours, they felt restrictive around the front part of the foot and became extremely uncomfortable. The heel also feels fairly high and the front part of the shoe feels like it has no cushioning. I was able to exchange these for some merrells, no questions asked by REI. What I lost in style I gained in comfort(they were just not as attractive as the salomons).I also wanted to add that I tried on other goretex/waterproof salomons and they all felt exactly the same. Until salomon gets their act together they will not be getting any of my money!

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
This is a great light hiking/trail runner for those who are looking for a show that is light but still has a solid enough sole to hold up when hiking on more difficult terrain for extended periods of time. I am a pretty avid hiker and backpacker and these have worked great on 10-15 mile hikes. Great waterproofing technology in these shoes as they have kept my feet very dry in the rainy/snowy pacific nw. The only caution with these shoes is that if you are walking in puddles or stream water can get in the shoe from the top because the cut is rather low. But really a small complaint for a great product. Salomon delivers quality with this light hiking/trail runner.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I'm a fan of the lacing system, with a big EXCEPT I've had the laces bust twice well before the shoe was worn out. Not a fan of buying a new pair of shoes because the laces aren't replaceable. These shoes feel a little heavier and stiffer, probably good for some, but makes it less of an ideal wet weather trail running shoe - which is why I bought it. The tongue in my right shoe causes a lot of discomfort on the top of my foot, but I'm hoping this will go away as they break in. The one thing that bothers me, and it's just stupid change for change's sake, is the tongue is shorter than previous versions, and now the little pocket where you're supposed to tuck in the excess laces, is smack dab UNDER the lacing cinch instead of above it. Now it's almost unusable. Just stupid. Other than that, it's an ok shoe. Not a [$] shoe though.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
Killed a different pair of trail runners during a trip to Salt Lake City and Moab and needed a quick replacement that I could snowshoe with way up in the mountains one day and the very next be canyoneering around Moab. These shoes performed very well out of the box. Nitpick would be that the laces have a bit too much extra length for my average foot volume and average sized shoe. They loosen up a bit and don't tuck easily into provided pocket in the shoe tongue. This was not a huge problem though just a little annoying. I Haven't had these for long enough to really comment on durability; but seems normal for a lighthiker type of shoe. Very comfortable and I would recommend for lighthiking or even relatively lightweight backpacking. Get a pair of low gaiters and you're set for almost any conditions.
Would not recommend for trailrunning. I'm an avid runner and like a faster pace. This shoe does not do well for fast running at all. Too heavy and clumsy for technical trail running, but perfect for hiking.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
This shoe had too many problems right out of the box. They broke down quickly, were uncomfortable, and caused unusual pain for a new shoe. I have spent five years in the US Marines deployed around the world, work for REI and other adventure outfits, and currently working in the field of organic farming. These shoes were not good for me and that is hard to do. I am taking this as a fluke because Salomon makes quality footwear that I will continue to buy, just as an idea though-stay away from this model.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 6 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
Regardless of whether you like these or not, they are hardly trail runners. They are more like soft / light day hikers. I would never want to jog in these.
The Comp 6s are also noticeably stiffer than the previous version - probably due to additional overlays that have no apparent purpose. The heel feels looser/wider than previous versions as well and I get a fair amount of rubbing / slipping. The lacing layout has also changed, although I'm not sure if that causes any problems.
Durability wise, I assume these will hold up as well as previous versions, although I'm close to taking them back due to the poor fit & clunky feel.
I've been through probably 8 pairs of the Salomon Comp series going back to the Comp 3s. I don't know what their engineers are thinking with the updates, but this is the second time they've made changes that adversely affected the fit.

These kicks are amazing, super comfortable and lightweight. Would definitely recommend them to friends and family. They also keep your feet dry thanks to the goretex membrane!! A+
