Buy a size smaller. Great for longer legs! Fabric de-wrinkles quickly. Style is less about "slimming" and more about really serious use hiking and backpacking with useable pockets that don't cause the pant leg to get too tight or limit your movement. No waist issues between pants and pack either, a common issue for me with trendy lower waist styles. I almost bought men's pants this time because they tend to have more pocket room, but these are the BEST! 100% great!

I have had several older (4+ years) pairs of the REI convertible pants that I wear almost every day. They were getting very old and I wanted to replace them. I am 5'7" and have always worn a size 14 women's. The version I had came with a black nylon web belt and the "clasp" clicked together like a dog collar might (very secure).

The new version is about 2 inches too long in the legs. Fortunately the petite size was the right length. My old pants were more of a light tan color. The new ones are more an army khaki with a greenish shade to them. I wasn't happy with the color but I was willing to accept it.

However, the feature which caused me to return the pants was the side pockets (the ones that are open, not velcro'd). I usually put my cell phone in one side and my keys in the other. The "depth" of the pockets are only about one-half to two-thirds as deep as my old pants. The old ones went well below the side pocket that was velcro'd. I found that the phone and other things had a tendency to fall out (I don't like my pants really tight-fitting). I don't know why the new pants pockets are so shallow. It was a deal breaker for me and I returned the 3 pairs I had bought.

I really wish that REI would go back to the old model. I will look each year with the hope that they will change back to what I think was a better design.

These are great looking pants for hiking, and they are comfortable, lightweight and stylish with the zippered legs, but they are not durable. I took them out on one hiking trip with rock scrambling, and I got holes in the butt from scrambling along the rocks. REI did take them back though, without hesitation, which I appreciated. Great for plain walking trails and recreational hiking, but not for any real heavy hiking trails with rock scrambling.

Love these pants. They do seem to run a little big in size so you may want to think about one size smaller. They are very roomy and allow me to climb with comfort. The legs zip off very easily when you want to go to shorts, and I justt can't say enough good things about these pants. I wish they came in more colors though :)

The pant leg was huge on this pants such that it looked like there was a balloon of material around my thighs.

I am normally a 0 or a 2 in petite (5' 1", 110 pounds) but I suspect this is the design of the pants. The waist fit mine though so maybe its good for folks with small waists.

I bought 2 pairs of these yesterday. I had previously purchased a pair of the recent regular Shasta convertible pants with the lower rise. They did not work well due to having to tug the pants up all the time. With this new "retro" version, that problem is gone. These are lightweight, durable, have great pocket quantity & placement, and the belt allows you to keep them in place and not have to make adjustments.

I went hiking today with a pack and not once did I have to tug at the pants to keep them in place. They stay in place! The legs are really roomy - might be too roomy for some, but for me it give greater range of use with a variety of footwear & hiking boots. I used the new features on the lower leg where the lower sides also zip open and found that when I was ready to remove the bottoms it was super easy to do so while standing. Nice improvement and also like the smart color coding for the right & left leg zippers.

The waist seems enormous, but the belt keeps them in place. I may sew in a few darts to make the waist a more appropriate fit so it does not bunch up.

Overall these are fabulous, with the only issue for me being the over-sized waist.
