Comments about Montrail Feather Peak GTX Hiking Boots - Women's - 2010 Closeout:
I am using this boot as a training boot for Mt Rainier where I will wear a stiff, plastic mountaineering boot. These have performed fantastically over mud, snow, rock and up to Camp Muir, to the summit of Mt St Helens-most importantly my feet have been totally dry even when I stepped into a river, through very wet mud and hours and hours through snow. I put in Super Feet, sprayed w additional Snow-Block and keep them clean and dry between uses. I am also prone to heel blisters and have NOT gotten any with these boots even while wearing a heavy pack of 30 lbs. The toe rubber does peel back at the edge but a couple drops of shoe glue fixed that. For a good cheap stiff durable boot that you need to take a beating, the price/value can't be beat. Yeah, when I win the lotto I will be buying the $400.00 boots but for now who needs em.

I completely forgot to break into these boots before beginning my hike. Regardless, I wore these boots on my 16.4 mile hike in the Great Smoky Mountains. Climbed a total of 5000 feet in elevation and as you know, what goes up must come down. I must say, these boots do provide plenty of support, but after this hike, I think I will be retiring these boots prematurely. I have wide feet and these boots were clearly made for someone with narrow feet. For the whole 16.4 miles, my feet hurt. Having to walk this much with your feet hurting the entire way is no fun. Yes, I should have worn them at least once before even climbing in them, but what can you do if you forget? The ankle support was really supportive. In fact, it was so supportive while descending it started to hurt the lower back of my leg where the boots were putting pressure on.
I love the fact that these boots are water proof, it's great to wear on trails with little creeks everywhere.
I'm 5'3 and God has blessed me with thick strong legs. Honestly, these are REALLY great boots, it's sturdy, provides lots of support, great arch, but they're just not the boots for someone like me. I feel like if I had slim feet and legs, my experience with these boots would have been different, better.

Bought these because they were on sale and needed some waterproof backpacking boots for a trip I am headed on. Let me say they have so far exceeded my expectations in every way! I was worried about break-in time, but I went on two shorter hikes before hiking to Camp Muir in the snow for hours and felt no pain, no rubbing, and was dry (until one of my gators malfunctioned). Only pain ever was when I ran down the first two trails -- which was only dumb on my part as they were the first uses and I already felt so comfortable in these babies. Definitely a steal for the price!

I have some Montrail trail runners and some older Montrail mountaineering boots that I love so I was hopeful that these would work. I tried them on a couple short day hikes to break them in, but noticed the possibility of hotspots on the back of my heels. I used them on a 4 day backpacking/mountaineering trip up to Glacier Peak this summer. 40+ miles and about 10,000 total combined elevation gain. I used them with strap-on crampons for the glacier portion and they worked great and were waterproof. They were also excellent on rock and trail for stability and traction. The footbed was comfortable but unfortunately the heel cup was too stiff for me and I ended up with painful blisters on both heels. The other negative was that the rubber on the toebox was starting to peel back by the end of the trip. If not for the blisters, I'd keep these, they're a good backpacking boot for the price. They just didn't work out for me but they'd be worth getting if they fit right. I have an average width foot and they seemed just right in width.

On the Pros and Cons I don't feel that I have used them long enough to know how they do in all situtations. I am disapointed in the front leather peace. I have worn them twice on easy trails to break them in and it is already peeling back. Also the style of sock you wear is important. I do like these shoes and don't regret getting them. They are light weight, grip the smallest of objects, don't make my knees or hips hurt, and I look very forward to putting them to the truest of test over time.
