Comments about Mountain Hardwear Barisian Soft-Shell Jacket - Women's - 2010 Closeout:
This jacket is awesome! I tried on at least a dozen soft shells before settling on this one. The fabric is softer and thicker than many other soft shells (some of them were so stiff they were practically hard shells). The pockets are nice and high to accommodate a pack and although I haven't used it with a helmet yet, the hood would definitely fit with one. I really like that the hem is adjustable. The range of motion with the arms is also great, so for hiking or climbing where you anticipate needing to use your hands this jacket would be great. I haven't taken it in torrential rain, but for the light rain and high winds I've been in, it's done a great job with water and wind resistance. I haven't had it long enough to comment on durability.
All in all a great jacket, but you definitely must size up. This is my first Mountain Hardware purchase so I'm not sure if this is the case with all their stuff, but I'm unfailingly an XS in all brands (5'6" 110 lb) and sometimes can't even fit into the XS because it's too big (frequently a problem with North Face). The XS in this jacket was very tight and the sleeves were way too short. The small is perfect and I can comfortably fit a base layer and a light fleece under it. If I had been looking to fit a heavier fleece under it I would have gone up to a medium.
