The product description specified the thumb loop was internal. I find it to work just fine, and it isn't 'OUT THERE' and obvious when you prefer to not use it. The top is cute, well tailored, and has a fantastic feeling fabric. This fabric is lightweight however, so do not buy this assuming it is a super warm winter sweater. Base layer yes, light long sleeve top, yes.

This top makes a cozy mid- to lightweight base layer (REI should not categorize it under "Heavyweight" long underwear). I bought it for a summer-season trip to Antarctica and it quickly became one of my favorites. The fabric is lightweight, but it's soft and cozy, making it a very comfortable layer to strip down to once you're back inside.
I have the black and find that I can wear it on its own without any problems. The cut is unusual - almost like an empire waist, but slightly lower, but I actually it to be quite flattering for my figure (slim but busty). I've worn it as a casual top without anyone realizing that it was actually a base layer (a good argument for the internal elastic thumb loops).

Not as pictured. The photo shows it tapered to your body but it is just a bag. The fit is ill in that the bust fits well but the sleaves are too long and the whole thing is just weird.
Also it is so light-weight you can see thru it.
Would be okay to layer i guess.

I bought this for hiking and as a base layer for running. The fabric is soft but the sheerness of the material means I'd never be able to wear it without a top layer, which is a shame since the style is very cute. Even the stamp on the back shows through the material. It's very thin and I doubt it would add much warmth. The thumb loops are kind of useless. It's going back tomorrow.
