After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Scott Sportster 55 Bike - 2011:

I spent a significant amount of time comparing bikes, brands, models, and so on before finally deciding on this bike- and I'm very happy with my choice. Although the vast majority of my riding is on the road, I live in prime mountain biking country and still wanted to be able to hit the dirt once in a while- not to mention most of the paved roads around here are covered in sand and gravel anyways. This bike is a great combination of both worlds. It rides like a road bike- smooth, fast, and quiet- yet has the comfort and cool factor of a mountain bike.

As far as handling I'd say that this bike is probably 75% road and 25% dirt which, again, was exactly what I was looking for. While touring on the asphalt I feel like I'm on a road bike, with the exception of the flat bar and controls. In the dirt it feels like it should be a little more unstable than it is because of the narrow tires, but it actually handles pretty well. I don't think I would feel comfortable on any single track or huge downhill- but let's face it- the bike wan't intended for that in the first place.

Although the white seat and grips have quickly soiled, the construction of this bike is sound, the components are quality, and the bike is just plain stylish. I had not actually seen the bike (in person) before I picked it up, and I must say that I was taken back by the sheer sexiness. Scott has done an excellent job filling a niche in our sport. Well done.

So far this bike has been good. The only complaint I have is that the seat is terribly uncomfortable. I will be replacing it.

Comments about Scott Sportster 55 Bike - 2011:

I had an Iron Horse Full Suspension, Specialized FSR XC, a Trek 1000, a Specialized Secteur, but not one of them could beat the smoothness of the ride and gearing of this bike. It just runs like butter. For a dual sport hybrid under $600, it is the best bang for the buck.

Comments about Scott Sportster 55 Bike - 2011:

Primary use is recreational on paved roads (suburb of Chicago sidewalks and roads) and gravel paths in Forest Preserve parks. Overall, I tried several bikes and this is a good "hybrid" or all-around bike, which is what I was looking for. I knew I wasn't going to be carving roads or trails but needed something for a little of everything. Overall, it handles dynamically (maybe too dynamic), it's quick, reasonable light granted it has a fork, and seems durable so far. The color scheme is attractive and sporty. My main gripe is cosmetic - use of white grips and saddle that soil easily. The tires are OK - I'd prefer something more like the Conti Double Cross or something more toward road with some grip, but these came with Kendas which are OK. The other gripe is that it doesn't have a lockable fork. For the price you pay and the nature of the bike, the fork should be lockable. It's adjustable though. If you're looking for a mountain bike, buy a mtn bike; similarly, if you are looking for a road bike, go for a road bike. BUT if you are looking for a slight mix of both without going hardcore, then this is a great choice!
