I bought this down shirt with high hopes for a lightweight layer to take on a fall hike in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. On the first night the temp dropped to the 30's - a perfect time to use the layer. It didn't work. The shirt added no warmth whatsoever. I tried it as a layer close to my skin, a middle layer and an outer layer. It provided no added warmth. I don't know why - it sure looks good... I suspect there are two reasons: 1) the stitching goes all way through - and there is a lot stitching to create all the little baffles... so there is bound to be seepage and 2) there is not enough down in each cell to add warmth. Very dissapointed. Return was politely accepted by REI.

The Patagonia Down Shirt is one of the best pieces of kit I own. It is very compressible; so there is always room for it in your pack. When you put it on it feels so light as if you are wearing nothing at all. After a few seconds heat starts to build and you are VERY aware you are wearing this shirt. Even though it is quite small, it is warmer than the heaviest fleece I own and is substantial enough to keep you warm on 20 degree days with little activity. This shirt is very expensive, but if you want a layer that is exceptionally worm and small enough to always be on hand, it is easily worth the price.
