Comments about Novara Express Bike - 2011:
I bought this bike for my 8 mile/day commute to and from work. I wanted something with a little more speed and efficiency than my older hybrid. The Express definitely delivers. The riding position is comfortable yet aerodynamic and once you get up to speed, the bike coasts really well. The components are roughly mid-grade all around and seem solid so far. I can attest that the brakes work very well as I've had to use them a few times to avoid cars that didn't see me. The multi-speed feature is really handy since I have a huge hill to climb at the beginning of my commute and this bike does it like a champ. The only con I have is that the seat felt a little uncomfortable at first compared to my previous cushy one. But after a few rides, I now don't notice it and plan on keeping it. All in all, I'm really happy with my purchase.

Comments about Novara Express Bike - 2011:
I bought this bike to replace my 35 year old ten speed Nishiki road bike that has a lot of worn-out components. It has been a good choice and seems to be okay for a lower mid-range priced bike and for the type of riding I do now. I like the flat handlebar. It seems to be a little stiffer and rougher riding than my old Nishiki probably because it has an aluminum frame. The Nishiki is steel. The front derailleur is pretty cheesey and I expect to have to replace it one of these days. The rear derailleur is good enough. I found that I don't have the horse power anymore for steep hills with the stock rear cassette so I replaced it with a Shimano SLX CS 11-34 rear cassette and can now go anywhere I want. The stock chain was just long enough to accommodate the larger low gear. I like the brakes. My old Nishiki had steel rims so stopping in the wet was pretty dicey, the alloy wheels on the Express allow me to stop when and where I plan to. [...]

Comments about Novara Express Bike - 2011:
I was tired of expensive road bikes and mountain bikes, so I sold them all and bought the Express. I couldn't ignore the 20% discount...I ended up with a pretty decent bike for [$] Sure, the components could be better, but the Deore group feels almost like Deore XT. It rolls out smooth and fast. It has a carbon fork, so it's comfortable, and it has a quality aluminum frame (nice welds!) The gray paint job is definitely non-flashy, but if you take this thing to the store, it doesn't attract the attention of would-be thieves. The crank arms are a little too long for the low bottom bracket, so I am upgrading to a Deore 170mm crankset. I also went for a Forte carbon riser bar and Forte Courier pedals. These upgrades are not mandatory...this bike is really good bone-stock. BTW, I commute 28 miles round-trip 3-4 days a week, plus weekend riding...I do it all on my Express!

REI customer service is superb. If your a beginner or you just don't want to deal with craigslist, this is a good option.
