by fromGoes downhill quickly I've used the jacket to ski, hike, and for general wet weather over the past 4-5 years. At first I loved it since it was waterproof, breathable, stretched well, and fit well. Admittedly I may have been so in love with it because it was my first higher-end light-weight jacket. Unfortunately, over time it has become much less waterproof. I've followed the cleaning and ironing instructions to a tee, but now the jacket cannot even repel the lightest snow. My clothes under the jacket get wet almost immediately. So, the jacket started out great but the waterproof coating deteriorated much quicker than it should have for a $200+ jacket. I will not buy another jacket with eVent fabric from REI or elsewhere.

by fromGreat Material -Horrible Zippers...STILL The eVent fabric is phenomenal at doing what it is advertised to do. While this jacket overall is a great buy, the designers at REI - for whatever reason have still not included good zippers in the product line. If you do a little searching for reviews from last season about this jacket... you'll find very similar reviews. Great product - but the ZIPPERS are Soooo frustrating that it makes that much of a difference as to NOT purchase this jacket. And unfortunately, the problem still persists this season as well. Oh well, guess we'll try again next season!

by fromdisappointed in durability I have always been pleased with REI products and their quality. I purchased this jacket to replace a Gore-Tex jacket that I have had for many years that was finally wearing out. After wearing this for a month mostly for casual use I have a hole in the liner where it just wore through. There is nothing that I can find that could in any way cause this except just poor quality in the fabric. I really like the Event exterior fabric so I have a real dilemma as to what to replace it with. I don't feel comfortable in purchasing the same jacket again.

by fromNice Jacket, questionable durability Just moved to Seattle and needed a breathable, high quality raincoat - I generate heat very easily and need something that helps keep my dry from the outside and the inside. I use this for both bus commuting and following my sons through the woods on Boy Scout events. Love the non-tacky cloth-like interior. This Event fabric coat fit the bill for what I was looking for, so I bit the bullet and dropped the cash for this coat. After about 9 months of flawless performance, the fabric started absorbing, rather than repelling water. I followed all the manufacturer washing instructions and recommendations. The final straw was during a soccer game on a cold, drizzly Saturday morning. I took off the coat to find that the front of the coat leaked - not the zippers, it was the fabric itself. My whole stomach area was wet - it really surprised me. First time I've used the return policy at REI - they were great about it - they're still the best retailers out there. Now back to the drawing board to find a new raincoat.

by fromGreat fabric, too tight The e-vent fabric seemed to work, although to be honest I did not keep it long enough to know for sure. The hood was huge and hard to tie down, but that is par for the course for this type of jacket. More problematic, the fit impaired mobility over a midweight fleece, especially in the arms and shoulders. Articulated elbows and a bit more room in the arms needed for cold weather wear, as the jacket itself is not insulated. Might work well in warmer conditions over a lighter layer, but I sent it back.

by fromWill be great once bugs are worked out. eVent is great, but this jacket needs some work. For me (5'9" 155lbs) the medium was too snug and the large is to baggy. I like the velcro at the wrist, but there needs to be more of it. I don't mind that it has a helment-compatible hood, but it needs adjustment features that make it usable without a helment (the hood really only works for me if I'm wearing a baseball cap). If Rab can do it, REI can. I am able to stuff the whole jacket into the side pocket, and as such, a double sided zipper would be appreciated. At this price point, I would expect a way to roll (and secure) the hood into the collar. As a nit, it would be nice if the welded seams along the zippers laid flat. On a positive note, the zippers on my jacket worked fine (unlike the experience other reviewers have had), and I do like the two-way zipper on the front. I'm going to order a Kimtah and see how it compares.

by fromTerrible for tropical! Not waterproof. I am currently a Peace Corps Volunteer, living at 5500 feet about 7 N degrees latitude. Although I was told it would be breathable and waterproof, I find myself sweating and the arms leak water. The temperature is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit with 70% humidity here. The jacket travels great and is very durable. Unfortunately several times I have been caught in rain storms where my arms get wet while my body sweats. Coming from Portland, OR, I think this jacket main function is to be stylish while walking to work in a drizzle. It is not a jacket for serious outdoor use in a warm tropical climate.

by fromGreat Jacket, Poor Durability I really Enjoyed this product, However I am rather disappointed in the Durability of the coat. It wears very quickly, I mean after only two winters of skiing the back is getting worn out, and loosing its waterproofing capability. eVent is a great design, however Gore-tex by far takes the rep for durability. I will be switching back to Gore-tex.
