Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

I bought this for my '96 Jeep Wrangler. I'd had a Thule spare tire rack but hated it because it would always shift. When I bought a new full suspension (small frame) mountain bike, I found that even with an adapter the rack no longer worked. It has scratched the heck out of my brand new Yeti. I love this new bike rack. I do still need to use the adapter bar but it no longer scratches my frame. Plus, I think the rack looks a lot nicer on the back of my Jeep.

Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

Bought this for my wife's 2012 Rav4. Super easy to install, very sturdy and secure. Love the foldable arms and the built in bottle openers!!

Only problem is with bikes with no traditional top tube...but there is a additional top tube attachment for sale.

Overall, if you have a spare on the back and don't/can't do a hitch...this is the way to go.

I had the same problems as another review with a Honda CR-V. The rack does not seat firmly on the mount and rotates a couple of degrees to the left. It looks to be a great rack, just doesn't seem to work well with the CR-V.

Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

The Bike Rack works great!! Purchased it to fit Toyota Rav4 and to drive from California to Rhode Island transporting one bike. The bike rack performed great, and the installation was quick and easy. Appreciated the cable lock that was included with the bike rack as well. Bikes are easy to place and take off bike rack. Does require that the spare tire cover be removed in order to mount the bike rack onto the Rav4. Only complaint is that the knob was tightened very tight by my husband to ensure that it would stay on for the entire road trip and I could not untighten upon arrival in Rhode Island. Will need to get help from someone with a larger hand.

I had a Yakima rack on my CX7 and when I sold the vehcile I was sorry to see it go.

I was happy to find the Sparetime at REI. It took a few minutes to install and it firmly holds two road bikes.

Oh and it looks cool on my 2011 Jeep Wrangler.

Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

This model does not fit the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) Rubicon model. This model has the spare tire carrier mounted directly to the read door of the Jeep. The mounting bracket will align with the three mounting screws on the spare tire carrier, but the carrier tongue (which fits thru the spare tire wheel centerpiece and then slips into the Yakima bike carrier post) won't align with the wheel centerpiece as it is welded onto the Yakima baseplate off-center. Lots of hard work and effort, but will return this model to REI. Don't waste your time if you have this 2012 Jeep model!!

Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

Used this on a recent 1000mi road trip around WA with two road bikes on a 2007 Honda CRV. Initially we bought the Thule, but after assembling and installing it, found the horizontal distance between the arms too great to accomodate my companions small frame. After assembling and installing both, I have these observations:

The Yakima is heavier, requires less assembly, and of a better construction. The mounting pads, while of a simpler design on the Yakima, are easier to use and more effective. The smaller distance between the arms on the Yakima, besides accomodating smaller frames, allows greater horizontal offset between two bikes which facilitates the nesting of handlbars and seats when carrying two bikes. One negative, the bottle openers on the Yakima are useless!

One area of concern, mentioned by others, is the loose fit of the square sleeve on the rack that slips over the square tonge attached to the tire mount but, at least for us, if the vertical body of the rack is in contact with the rubber of the tire and the securing screw tightened down, the rack is steady and solid and remained so throughout our trip without further tightening.

Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

This is the best bike rack option for spare tires specifically the RAV4. This rack allows you to open the back swing gate while the bikes are still attached to the car.
I drove 1,700+ miles from NH to Key West with this rack and it was solid and had no problems.

Only holds two bikes so you will need to go with roof or trailer hitch if you need more bikes.

Comments about Yakima SpareTime 2-Bike Carrier:

I bought this for a 1998 Honda CR-V. Unfortunately when properly installed, the rack does not fit snugly against the spare tire, leading to some unnerving movement in the rack.

I noticed at least one other Honda CR-V owner with the same problem on this site. I contacted Yakima support and they suggested returning the rack. It's unfortunate because the design is nice, but it seems there is no way to secure the rack to this vehicle.

The only good thing about this rack is the quality of materials used in construction; other than that, this rack is terrible. No matter how much you tighten it down the rack can rotate 1-2 degrees to the left or right on your spare tire. The rear suspension on my MTB would not allow me to use all three straps to secure the bike. When I placed my road bike on the rack with my MTB, the two bikes could move and rub against each other. Absolutely a terrible rack, which is sad because I really don't want to take my front tire off and place my bike on a roof rack everytime I want to take it somewhere.
