Comments about Komperdell Trekker Antishock Trekking Poles - Pair - '09 Overstock:
Given that I got these on closeout, I was not expecting anything but the basics. The poles themselves seem well-built. The latching mechanism seems sturdy, though I never got to test it out on the trail.
The first thing that I noticed is the incredibly poor grip design. The ridge that is supposed to fit between your forefinger and middle finger is very far away from the top of the grip. I have large hands, but the ridge's positioning was much too far from the top of the grip, It left room for one two fingers above the grip if you have small hands. When I positioned my hand in the center of the grip, this ridge was right in the center of my middle finger. If I repositioned my hand so that it fell between the middle and forefingers, my little finger rested on the very end of the grip ; where it curved sharply outward.
This was not the only strange thing about the grip. The center portion (where your last three fingers rest is slightly concave. with the most depressed are falling between my middle and ring finger. The natural position is to have the ring finger slightly closer to centerline of the grip and the pinkie even closer to the grip's centerline. When combined with the slightly forward-canted angle of this grip, it is extremely uncomfortable. I can see why the Komperdell poles are all on closeout. By far the worst grip design I have ever encountered. I went to the store and tested the grips on the Leki, Black Diamond, and REI brands, and every one was comfortable. I know why you never see Komperdell hiking and ski poles. Not a bargain at any price.
P.S. When I got my poles, they were not anti-shock as advertised, so check them - the title could be a misprint.
