This is really a very good lunch box/bag - my favorite. I bring frozen meals to work for lunch often, as well as cold salads and pasta, and it maintains the temperature of all of these items, with room to spare for snacks. I am a runner and bring a good deal of food with me, and it has enough space for every food item I need to last me through the day. A breakdown:

Frozen meals: I often take a prepared frozen meal with me to work for lunch. If I put a freezer pack in the icepack "sleeve" inside the cooler, my frozen meal is still completely frozen 5-6 hours later. And my banana or apple is not. The cooler fits a standard frozen meal easily, with room for snacks (pretzels, crackers) in baggies and a piece of fruit.

Cold salads: The cooler fits a standard "take-to-work" lunch container (the type you can get in a multipack from the grocery). I was worried when I ordered it that it wouldn't, but, again, it fits it easily, with room to spare. I can pack a meal-sized salad in here, still with room for fruit and a carb snack, and the salad will stay cold. I don't need a freezer pack for already cold salads to keep them cold.

Pasta/rice meals: I put pasta meals or leftovers in the standard take-to-work container, as well, and this pack keeps the pasta or rice cold (important with rice especially, for food-safety reasons). I do use a freezer pack for the rice meals, just to be safe.

In terms of portability, this cooler fits very well into my commuter backpack on top of my books (I'm a Ph.D. student and instructor and have a lot of books in my backpack; not a problem for this bag).

In terms of size, it is not big enough to hold a soda or seltzer can along with a frozen meal or good-sized plastic meal container, but this doesn't bother me.

And in terms of food smells, the cooler prevents them from getting into my backpack: my backpack never smells like a banana, for example.

Misc.: I like the outside zipper pocket to hold forks, napkins, etc. - convenient. The cooler is also well-made: sturdy zipper, rugged material. In terms of appearance, it doesn't look like a child's lunchbox; it's sleek-looking and unobtrusive. And finally, it packs down when it's empty, to take up less room in the bag.

Obviously, I highly recommend. I would have gotten it much sooner had I known of all of its positive qualities, so I'm hoping this review will be helpful to others who are looking for a basic, commuter-friendly lunch bag.

I bought this for my daughter who has a 9 month old. It is perfect for a bottle, baby food, diapers and wipes. Keeps the bottle cold for hours! Great size, slips in her backpack. Nice construction.
