Comments about Arc'Teryx Mantis 26 Pack:

I go through a new pack every semester, but this one is worth keeping. The organization is similar to the Muira 30 pack that I use for rock climbing, I really enjoy the way that bag works and this one is just as good. The panel load for the main compartment makes accessing everything really easy. The pockets on the front are useful, the larger one is big enough for a jacket or for lunch and gloves. The other front pocket is flat, but still holds several small items. The top pocket has an organizer for pens, holds about 10 for me, plus a pocket for an iPod and headphones. Great thing is, when the bag is sitting next to my desk, that top pocket lays open, giving me access to all of my supplies inside. There is a framesheet inside that contours the body; however, that can make packing items like books and laptops more difficult. I prefer the comfort personally. Arc'teryx claims this will hold a 17" laptop, I have a 15" MacBook Pro in a sleeve and it barely fits. I would not assume a 17" laptop to fit without trying it! I can put my laptop, a couple books and a jacket in the main compartment. The mesh pockets on the side will not hold a 1L Nalgene bottle. I have a 27oz. Klean Kanteen and that is a tight squeeze, but it does hold! I own several bags from Arc'teryx and I can tell the quality difference with the lower price, don't get me wrong though, the bag is still of great quality. Particularly the fabric. I have the Coffee Bean color and in the sunlight it seems iridescent, it continues to get compliments. My only complaint thus far is the zippers. It seems the pulls get sideways and complicate opening. I have had to learn how to deal with them, not a big problem, but a more solid zipper would be nice (and more expensive).

Comments about Arc'Teryx Mantis 26 Pack:

The Mantis 26 is an awesome low-profile backpack for school or travel carry-on usage. One can't put more than one thick textbook (and etc.) in it, but it fits all the notebooks and slim-ish books I need for the day. Extra points for the very convenient top pocket that keeps pens, pencils, gum, iPod, and pocket notebook at easy reach. The flat front pockets easily carry medium-sized/trade paperback-sized books and the mesh side pockets fit 20 oz bottles without compromising the sleek silhouette of the pack.

The only big negative is the design of the laptop sleeve. The frame sheet is nice in keeping the bag off one's back, letting air flow, but prohibits the sleeve from storing a laptop. Even after taking out the sheet, it'll only hold a 13" screen laptop without neoprene protection. Since I don't carry my computer most days, it's not an issue for me, but I can see this being a sticking point for some folks. The main compartment is not bad (after all, this is a sleek bag), but is top-heavy as displayed in the picture. There's not too much depth at the bottom of the bag, so one can't throw in any significant extras in addition to books (except for an odd or end at the top of the main compartment).

Comments about Arc'Teryx Mantis 26 Pack:

I bought this for a trip to the UK where i'd be traveling for almost three weeks. I used it as a carry-on and then as my day bag. It worked great, was comfortable to carry. The sternum strap is a little high on me, I'm tall and have about a 20" torso, but it worked okay. I didn't use the hydration sleeve, rather I carried a 27 oz. Klean Kanteen in one of the side mesh pockets. There is no way to secure the bottle in the pocket so it would slip out if I leaned over or when taking the pack off. Overall I am very happy with the bag.

Comments about Arc'Teryx Mantis 26 Pack:

A backpack for work or school was never my thing, so my review focuses on use as an excursion bag. I have for a long time, been an advocate for minimalist treking. For me...this fills the bill for everything one would NEED. It stays out of the way when climbing, running, rafting. It's tough, and lightweight. If you NEED a tent, cook stove, sleeping bag, 3 changes of clothes etc. I'd tell you this bag ain't gonna cut it for you. There's no lashing points, so forget attaching anything to it. But it will carry two Nag bottles (the 1 liter WILL fit - at least on bag it does - but its tight); a small first aid kit, jacket, socks, AND a sweater...with room to spare. Throw a couple strips of jerky into the large outside pockets and what more do you need for a week (or more)?
