Comments about Brunton Solaris 6 Foldable Solar Array - '09 Overstock:

The produce is fairly well design with nice durable solar cells. The cable included can get a bit of update, a USB cable would be nice.

The power output of this product is very poor. I own a Solarport 4.4 previously and fond it to have reasonable power output, thus, I got this one thinking I can gain a bit more power while having a flexible package would be nice. However, the amount of power the cell put out is simply horrible.

Under my simple test, the cell will put out at:

        low end: 4.4V at 264mA - 1.17W
        Max power point: 8.61V at 179mA - 1.62W
        high end: 12.13V at 107mA - 1.3W

This is way lower than the advertised rating of 6W.

The low current output at 12V range make it fairly useless in topping up car/boat batteries.

Comments about Brunton Solaris 6 Foldable Solar Array - '09 Overstock:

I travel quite a bit in the developing world and I bought this for those times when an electrical outlet isn't available and I need to charge my electronics, especially my phone. It is relatively small, light, and durable, so it packs up nicely and stores easily. One potential downside is that you'll probably need extra adaptors; I had to get a car charger/cell phone power adaptor. This adds a bit more space when packing it up.

I've been doing a bit of shake down testing before I actually take it into the field and rely on it. I live in Chicago, and right now it produces almost no power, at any point during the day. I'm hoping that once our cloudy, short days transition to Spring, this product will perform better. As of right now, it won't charge my iPhone, much less provide trickle power to my laptop (as advertised). My tests are not scientific or anything like that - I just put it in the sun, plug in my electronic, and I get nothing.

Luckily I travel mostly to hot, sunny areas of the world, so there's still a chance it will perform as expected in those regions. If I had bought this for trips to northerly, snowy, cloudy places with short days, I'd be very unsatisfied.

I'm not necessarily angry or unsatisfied . . . yet. I'll wait and see if it performs better in Spring/Summer conditions; it isn't exactly fair to evaluate it only in a Chicago winter, I suppose. In the meantime, I couldn't recommend it to a friend not knowing if it really works or not.

This product was too large and the power hook ups were outdated. The newer chargers are much smaller and have a USB and mini USB hook up. I returned the product.

Simple rugged lightweight solar panel that works. In reference to the other reviewer, it's true that it doesn't include a USB port, but it doesn't advertise that it does either. Instead it provides a simple standard shaped plug so that with the right cable you can plug in anything you want. If you're using this product anywhere not in proximity to a major electronics store in the US selling a variety of overpriced special purpose adapters, this type of plug is much more useful.

Ok, the real reason for this thing is the OUTPUT- this is paramount as THE feature necessary for success.
                        It fails.
I can barely squeeze out 2 watts of usable power in the scorching Texas sun. No way this will trickle a car batt~ 12volts wont crack 105mA @ full sun at angle.

If you want to look like a cool gadget dude, great. if you want to capture the sun's energy efficiently, there are much better cells out there.
