Comments about Hi-Tec Cape Trail Waterproof Day Hiking Boots - Men's - '09 Closeout:
I purchased a pair of Hi-Tec "Cape Trail" shoes approx. one year ago. They have already reached the end of their useful life and with little actual wear or tear.
The uppers, inners, and stitching of the Cape Trails are all fine. However, the sole, which has the illusion of being 1/4" to 1/2" thick, is actually hollow! The knobs on the tread are hollow and have worn through allowing water to accumulate in the airspace that's left. This causes an annoying and embarrassing squishing noise.
If the knobs on the tread of the sole were solid, as one would expect, instead of hollow, these shoes would have at least another year of wear left in them. I've worn out many pairs of shoes in my 52 years of life and I've never seen a hollow tread before. A very poor design by Hi-Tec.

I'm on my second pair. Wore the soles out in a year. I wasn't surprised however, given the amount that I've worn them including pounding lots of payment. They have made great motorcycle boots, generally keeping my feet pretty dry and warm. Extended riding at highway speeds in heavy rain does force rain past the tongue. It isn't stitched far enough up the boot sides in my opinion. Once learned I took the duct tape to them before heading out. Problem solved.
