Comments about K2 Apache Recon / Marker MX 12.0 Bindings - '09/'10:
This is an awesome ski. Period. I bought the 08/09 version this past ski season at Steamboat (sorry REI!). This year's version seems to only have a cosmetic changes; all other components and metrics in the 09/10 ski seem to be the same. Before I put down the $$$ for these beauties, I tested a variety of other skis. These included included the K2 crossfires, K2 Xplorer, Salomon Xwing Tornado, Salomon Xwing Tornado TIs, Volkl AC30s, etc. Steamboat was my test bed. I spent about 30 minutes on each ski on a variety of greens, blues and blacks. I am a level 7 or 8 (read 7) skier. By far, the K2 Recons out performed all of the other skis. They plowed through crud, floated across powder, gripped hard-pack and ice, and ripped down the groomers. Later in the season I visited the Vail, Inc. resorts (Vail, Inc. owns Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge, A-basin and Beaver Creek among others). I brought the Recons to all of these mountains and the K2's performed amazingly at each resort and across all types of terrain. The only gripe would be the back bowls at Vail. The day I went to Vail, the powder was very deep in some places. The Recons handle powder very good, but just not the deep-deep stuff (might want to look at the K2 Xplorer if all you do is powder). Probably because of the 78mm waist. But, for the knee deep powder, these skis did great. The Recon is very smooth too. It feels like your floating. I'm guessing that extra layer of titanium really gives this ski a damp feel. But, K2 does a good job with all of the other "mod monic" technologies keeping the ski light weight despite the metal layer. I quickly lost my fear of crud because the Recons plow through this stuff like a bulldozer. Response time is quick and the Recons can carve wide or short turns without complaint. These skis are durable too. As you can tell from my 08/09 ski season, I beat the [*] out of these skis. When I brought them in at the end of the season to my local ski shop, the shop keeper thought that I had just got them (minus a few dings here and there). In short, I'd highly recommend this ski. It is in a league of its own and is well worth the money. You won't be disappointed.
