Great shoe early on -- good fit, light weight, waterproof, good traction. After less than one year of moderate use, the top two eyelets of one shoe began to tear and within 2 weeks they were done. Very disappointed.

Comments about Vasque Kota XCR Mid Hiking Boots - Men's - '08 Closeout:
After three of four hours the shoes broke in too much and felt like they were hundreds of hours old as far as flexibility. They felt like old sneakers. Also, the shoe is narrow up front, but the big toes can move up and down easily enough. I'm returning mine today. I'd rather hike in sandals than these things. Oh, hot shoes too.

I first broke these in by wearing them around the house and then to downtown on cement for a several mile walk to the football game. I wore the proper boot sock and they fit perfectly but my feet were too sweaty, far more so than they would have been with my gore-tex Asolos. I wore them several more times when I realized it's not just that they're hot, but they're just not very comfortable.
I avoid wearing them now. No, they don't hurt, pinch, or blister, they're just too hard perhaps, or they don't cushion the feet the way I expect this sort of boot to.
However, since I am not an avid hiker with these sort of light boot, I lack experience to draw on to arrive at a valid conclusion. Perhaps I expected too much from Vasque and XCR. I intend to return to the store and try on comparable boots to see it the problem is really my own.

Comments about Vasque Kota XCR Mid Hiking Boots - Men's - '08 Closeout:
Just got back from a 21 mile loop in North Carolina, much of which was on a very rugged section of the AT north of Standing Indian mountain. I'm not gonna lie, my feet got a bit sore by the end of the trip but whose wouldn't after 21 miles? But they kept me warm and dry and were very comfy for the most part. Walked right thru some small creeks and stayed nice and dry, also hiked in the rain for about 4 miles and stayed dry. The size is very true. They look great and do not require hardly any break-in time whatsoever. I wore them for a short walk around my neighborhood the day before the big hike and they were fine. Only con would be that they may seem a tad heavy to me but I'm used to wearing flipflops and sneakers so what do I know? Everyone in the group loved them and the price was right too. I can't give an opinion on their endurance but they seem to be constructed of very durable material. Highly recommend.
