Comments about Garmin Topo U.S. 24K DVD - Southwest:
Even though I have included one "con" I'm still giving this product a five star. Call me old fashion, but I enjoy having the ability of looking at a "how to" book and the screen at the same time in order to figure out new computer programs. This program does not come with an instruction manual. You must teach yourself using the "help" function. I do have to say, the program was easy to learn, even without the booklet.
I've been using Mapsource Topo US for about the past 5 years. I have the GPS Map 76C, so I wanted color to go along with my color screen.
The graphics on Mapsource were awful. The maps actually looked like they had been drawn in with crayons. The accuracy of the trails for the most part were just as bad as the graphics. Sometimes, I'd be standing on the trail and the mapsource program would show me off by 1/4 mile and even more on occasion in the south Sierras. And I know the trail had never moved from its original position.
With the 24K Southwest, I can now disappear into the woods and go bushwhacking off trail for a while without having a problem relocating the trail when I decide to come back to the living. Its graphics are excellent. It also shows many more objects than the original Mapsource Topo. In fact, the first time I used this program, I was able to locate a large beaver pond that I had walked past at least 20 times before without ever knowing it was there, because the Mapsource didn't show it and the new 24K did.
There are so many more added bonuses available on this program than their were on Mapsource. I do quite a bit of long distance, weeklong hikes and appreciate the ability to see the actual elevation gain/loss prior to going on those hikes. Really helps me to plan in advance.
A great product.

Comments about Garmin Topo U.S. 24K DVD - Southwest:
i love this software. i ahve a map60csx unit and am an avid backpacker. i previously bought the mountain south sd card 24k topo, and had trouble with it. although the interface on the gps is the same as the dvd the sd card does not allow you to plan trips easily. it takes way to long to navigate throughthe topo maps on your unit. what you need is the ability to access everything on your computer and then transfer to your unit. and that is what the dvd offers. loaded with every peak and trails, wilderness, roads and also what a lot of poeple dont know is it navigates though streets and nieghborhoods. so you can navigate to your traihead. i love this software.

Comments about Garmin Topo U.S. 24K DVD - Southwest:
I have been using Garmin products since the GPS system became available to civilians. This is the best mapping product that I have ever used. The inaccuracy problems of the 100K maps have been eliminated. I tested this product in Rocky Mountain National Park and western Boulder County. I hiked up Twin Sisters Peak (7.4 miles RT, 2338 ft gain), once with the 2009 version of the 100K software and again with this software. With the 100K, I was usually located 300 to 500 feet off of the trail. With 24K software, I was shown to be within a few feet of the trail for the entire hike (both hikes were in May 2009 and both days had good satellite geometry). The trails and roads are up to date unlike other maps which are as much as 50 years out of date. Many trails which were missing on previous maps are now shown accurately. There are a few errors, but nothing like the previous maps. I have not tried urban navigating, but based on the detail provided by this software, I think that it should work well (depending on the GPS model used). Bottom line: if the 24K software is available for your area, buy it, and, as always, carry a map and compass for backup.
