Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
I concur with some of the other reviews that categorizing these as "mountaineering mitts" is a stretch. I am an extreme user of equipment, biking year-round in sometimes sub-zero temps. I am like a mad scientist on the quest for the perfect gear, and I have tested these against a number of gloves/mitts, by wearing the Ridgecrest on one hand, and a competitor on the other (North Face down Nupstse, Heated gloves, Manzella Ranch Hand, etc.)
Full disclosure - my hands are my weak point, and tend to run cold. I have found these ultra-comfy Ridgecrest comfortable biking for up to 1.5 hours in 30 degree temps. Below that range, my hands were cold, unless I used those instant heat packs.
I've also tested the Ridgecrest with a liner underneath on one hand, and no liner on the other. For me, having no liner actually keeps my hands warmer; it's similar to the concept of using a sleeping bag in colder temps – you don't want to wear tons of clothes, which prevents a warm pocket of air from circulating and keeping you warm.
For moderate use, these Ridgecrest mitts are great. However, for the extreme temps (or for people whose hands run cold), I love dogsledding mitts, particularly those made by Technical Advantage Gear (G2 Prairie Snowstorm Mitts are incredible, though somewhat bulky, and are rated to 30 degrees below zero!) Hope that helps!

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
I used these in New England in wind chills of 0 to 13 degrees, blowing snow and worked amazing. My hands never got wet and stayed totally warm. I also used them in Lake Tahoe snow shoeing and sledding. I have always used gloves, and these are the first pair of mittens I have owned, and so happy to make this purchase! Looking forward to many wet and cold adventures with these gloves.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
So, having just left my 2007 version of these mitts at Keystone today, I feel it necessary to write how distraught I am because of how much I truly enjoyed these mitts.
Generally, I wear these along with an REI liner glove underneath.
I use them for ice climbing, mountaineering, and snowboarding.
They are quite warm, and I normally have quite cold hands (hence my purchase of mitts).
The loft is great, they are waterproof, and the grip is durable!
I've been able to do many winter alpine ascents and ice climbs with these gloves, including sustained belays and rappels, with no issues of the grip wearing through. The 2007 version were ToughTek, so I'm not sure if that would be different now, but I have no hesitation in buying the new version to replace my lost version.
I can't attest to these gloves use watching an NFL game as a previous reviewer described, but I feel that my use is a bit more intense, and I've had no issues with them.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
Use these in the West -- drier than New England -- but, with thin liner gloves, they kept my hands comfortable down to -25C in Canada! After 5 years hard use, the coating on the thumbs is wearing off, but I still don't notice them leaking, and they dry out fast at home or in the huts.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
My hands are always cold, and I got these to wear snowshoeing. For once, my hands were the warmest part of my body! Even when I shoved my damp hands into them repeatedly, my fingers stayed toasty. The wrist strings were also very useful when I had to take the mittens off to blow my nose, etc.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
Although the outer shell seemed very durable and the overall construction seemed excellent, I was displeased with the inability of the mitts to keep my hands warm. After two hours wearing these mits in 10-15F temps, my hands became very cold. As the mitts are classified as mountaineering mitts, I would expect a much higher level of protection against cold temperatures. Perhaps wearing a liner would help, but the product does not make that claim. Besides, the sizing was small to begin with, and a liner would make the mitts too small.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
I don't agree with the negative comments of some Reviewers. I use for EZ Snowshoeing, XC Ski, general being outside when dexterity and intense arobics aren't an issue. Measure your hands and follow instuctions given at REI for the right size. Wear on bare hands. A great pull-it-on-and-go item. Not THE warmest mitten out there (not complaining or disappointed) but better that almost any glove (because it's a mitten). Nice and soft inside. Back of thumbs is a nice felt or dense fleece material for wiping a runny nose. Buy them if you want more than a glove but don't need down or otherwise heavy artillery. Perfect for what it is.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
I wear them in dawn walks during winter at 7,000 feet up. With Smartwool gloves inside them, they are the warmest combos of all the many I have tried in 30 years of walking in weather down to 10 degrees above zero. Only drawback is they seem a bit bulky at the tops so that when driving I sometimes inadvertently start my windshield wipers going.

Best glove for the price. you'd be crazy to spend more money on a glove that will preform virtually the same.

Comments about REI Ridgecrest Mittens:
They are great for staying warm at the summit during a hike, and were even warm when some snow got into them. I'm a beginner ice climber and they are grippy enough for belaying.
Get one size bigger so you can throw them on without taking off your lighter weight gloves or liners, or so you can keep hand warmers in them to help keep your hands extra warm.
