Comments about Gerber Answer 3.25 Fine Edge Knife:
I got this knife to take with me to Africa. I liked the knife's design and material (though it did add a significant weight to the knife.) There are two big problems with this knife.
1) The safety on the side of the knofe, which prevents the knife from opening, engages every time I pulled it out of my pocket. I have know idea why the designers never changed this? It is extremely frustrating and if used for a self-defense purpose you will die extremely embarrassed that you can't open up ur knife because you forgot the safety activated.
2)Secondly the thumb lever on the blade which engages the assisted opening sear is extremely small. Somewhere the designers must have thought about how to make the most frustrating knife to open. Not only is the thumb notch small it has to be pushed down instead of out to operate. This again is frustrating because everytime I remembered to take the saftey off I ended up tearing skin off my thumb to open the blade. Eventually it gets easier but even when you know how to press the lever it still has issues.
Bottom line: This knife is for someone who wants a heavy knife that looks tactical and needs lots of time to decide if they really want to open it up. Or give it as a present to someone you don't like. I ended up trading it back to REI and getting a Benchmade, and I am much happier I did.
