Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This is a fantastic jacket. I bought this to deal with the harsh winter we have coming up. I got the Men's Small and it seems to fit true to size.
Essentially, this jacket is a combination between the REI Taku shell and the Primaloft jacket offering from REI. Great individually, and just fantastic together.
I layer this upon a Columbia fleece usually with just a t-shirt underneath that. The jacket is wind/water/snowproof and has pit zips that unzip upside down which is a great feature! The pit zips can also help to regulate how much heat is lost or kept because they unzip VERY far all the way down to the top of the side pockets if needed, or just a little bit to suit the particular climate. The jacket has adjustable velcro cuffs to fit over or under gloves and all three outer pockets are taped so they are completely waterproof. It also features a zippered pocket on the interior of the jacket, as well as a mesh-type cell/mp3 pocket that is easily accessible. I found this pocket to be the most convenient for cellular devices or an iPod. The jacket isn't bulky and it provides immense heat retention via the Primaloft interior. The interior is made of 50% recycled materials so I feel pretty good helping the environment too! The hood isn't removable, but does feature a zip cord that helps to size it to one's head. The hood doesn't obstruct your view and I love the grey color I chose, though the green one looked pretty impressive as well.
All said, this jacket is going to be great for someone who doesn't retain or produce a lot of heat (i.e. short stature/thin people) If you have a fleece on underneath this jacket and still feel cold, there's something seriously wrong with you and you should go see a doctor about your bloodflow or something. I'll be looking at REI products more closely now that I actually own one before I look to name brands like North Face, which seem to only offer these features on their high end products and also seem to be competing with popularity and forgetting their roots as a company.
