For your reference, this page contains historical product information.

Developed to assist people in sub-Saharan Africa, the Kona AfricaBike blends simplicity and utility into a robust, versatile bike that gets you around town, across campus and to the store in comfort.

  • Through Kona's BikeTown program, for every 2 Kona AfricaBikes purchased, 1 is donated to the Kona AfricaBike program
  • Sturdy steel frame provides a smooth, easy-handling ride that's tough enough to take on daily commutes and urban adventures; step-through design allows easy mounts/dismounts
  • Shimano internal 3-speed rear hub provides smooth, intuitive shifting with the twist-grip shifter and a quick flick of the wrist
  • Front linear-pull brake and rear coaster brake provide controlled deceleration; coaster brake is intuitive to use—simply pedal in reverse
  • Proving its utilititarian heritage, the AfricaBike features a built-in rear lock, a full-length chainguard, front and rear fenders, a kickstand and a bell
  • Front basket can be folded up when not needed; frame-integrated rear rack is exceptionally strong for transportation of heavy loads
  • Continental TownRide tires are puncture resistant for worry-free riding
  • Plush saddle keeps your rear end comfortable through the miles
  • Specs are subject to change

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Kona AfricaBike 3-Speed Bike - 2009:

Wow!!!! this is a heavy duty bike, this bike has it all Extremely well made, it's not a light bike, very strudy. Will be great to do errands. Rear wheel locking system, front basket, the back transit rack is welded into the frame, even came with a small bottle of paint for nicks. Also came with a bell. You get alot of bike for the price. One draw back was no quick release for the wheels, though the tires look heavy duty so I am not expecting alot of flats. The ride is also very comfortable. I am 5'3 and the bike can adjust to my size. I am looking forward to running errands on this bike. Also this company gives back to a charity that they sponsor in Africa.[...]

Comments about Kona AfricaBike 3-Speed Bike - 2009:

I received my bike yesterday and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm 67 years old and have commuted/shopped most of my adult life by bike. Altough the bike is heavy, it moves easily and is very stable. The open/step-through frame allows you to mount an extra basket on top of the heavy duty rear rack. Kona evidently gave a lot of thought to the design of the AfricaBike Three. There's little to fault. Also, There's a very extensive helpful review by a UK blogger on Knoa's website. Perhaps one of the most important features of this bike is that for every two bikes they sell Kona sends one bike to Africa. You have to love a company like this. However, the bike stands on its own - a truly great urban assult bike.
