I bought this paddle with a fitness kayak and didn't know what paddle length would be suitable. It has allowed me to experiment with the length and angle, as well as use it on my other kayaks that are wider. Now that I've figured out the most appropriate paddle size and configuration, I can spend the big bucks on a lighter paddle and knowing that It'll be right for me, and relegate the Slice to a spare or a loaner. The blades are practically indestructible. The only downside of this paddle is that it's a few ounces on the heavy side, but for the price and versatility it can't be beat. I would recommend it for anyone just starting out, as it gives one the opportunity to settle into the most comfortable paddle style rather than being forced into a paddle style that is dictated by the equipment.

This paddle was recommended by a knowledgeable kayaker when I asked for the most versatile paddle to use with my hybrid Pyranha Fusion kayak on both flat and white water. To find it on sale at REI was a bonus. I just tried it on a 3 hour river trip at high water and was extremely pleased at its ease of use. The ability to select the length of paddle and feathering angle makes it extremely versatile and the quality and strength of material is excellent. After using a crafted wood kayak paddle for white water, I didn't find it heavy as mentioned by other reviewers. No water absorption yet and when I questioned a knowledgeable person on same, they said it was rare and the company stands behind their product. The only negative so far is the sticky labels affixed to the paddle shaft and blades that are difficult (impossible?) to remove, so I just left them on. Will provide additional updates with more use under varied conditions.

I bought one of these and after the first trip it had water in one side of it. I took it back and got another and the same thing happened. I am not pleased since I paid a little extra to have a lighter paddle.
